With next week being Thanksgiving everything is out of whack, and that includes my eating. I have to go to Mark’s on Wednesday to get my turkey, so I’m eating at Chuy’s for lunch today. At least I’m retired and I don’t have the agony of a three-day week then a five day week. You, however, get the agony of another country song from my list of my 100 favorite charted country singles. Sorry.
A Thousand Miles Ago - Webb Pierce
Hey, look, ol’ golden throat is back! You’d think I couldn’t stand Webb Pierce the way I rag on his voice. I really love his music; however, I don’t ever put on the entire Bear Family box set of his music and listen to it in one setting! In fact, the two songs on this list (“Slowly” is the other one) do me fine, thank you.
Pierce co-wrote this with a young singer/songwriter named Mel Tillis. They’d score a bigger success later in 1959 with their song “I Ain’t Never.” Both men were eventually enshrined in the Hall of Fame, but Pierce’s induction came ten years after his death from cancer.
Looking at his list of hits — and he had plenty of them — there are tons of great tunes on there. And I love so many of them. However, even country music geeks have their limits.
A Thousand Miles Ago
Written by Mel Tillis and Webb Pierce

Released as a single, 1959
Peak chart position: #6
Today’s rock song: “A Tear Fell”
I keep wonderin’ why she quit me:

Hubby knows it now that I told him what it was and knows who Webb Pierce is, but he didn't get it initially.
