I was cutting onions to put on the pizza for dinner tonight and my eyes started watering. I bravely plodded on and completed my task. Do you have any tips to prevent me from crying while cutting onions? I debated putting in a pic of my teary eye or the onions and went with the onions to spare mylotters some trauma.

I try to keep my head up as high as possible away from the onions. Some people wear safety glasses or swimming goggles.

I have regular glases and they don't help very much.

When I start cutting onions I feel unbeatable, after a while my eyes start burning. I feel you. I read a tip a while ago but I never applied it so I forgot. I guess it was just rinsing the onions in water or cutting them in water if it's practical, which I doubt.

i've read somewhere that it's the middle part that makes us cry and that we should try to avoid it when cutting onions. i try to stick with that rule - and i usually don't cry

@pitstop just avoid it and throw it in trash later.

Thats an easy one ! There are many ways but I will share the simplest and easiest one. Soak the onions in a utensil/container filled with water. Next , cut the onions while they are submerged in water. This would easily prevent all tears as all the tear producing components would be dissolved in water. The only thing you would have to worry is cutting the onions in the container/utensil.It is not easy at beginning to achieve the same. There will be resistance from water for the free movement. And do one onion at a time in the beginning and that should help you master the trick. But once you have mastered it , it is easiest way to prevent tears. Try and do let me know. Good luck!

That seems to be a common trick people use based on the trip lies.

Dipping them in cold water as you work helps.
