Do you travel or stay home most holidays?

Our official family Thanksgiving is Saturday at my dad’s (Thanksgiving Day my sister’s family will be with in-laws and my dad will be with his wife’s family). So I don’t have to go anywhere (if you’re wondering, Diana’s family invited me, but I would (unnecessarily) feel awkward). For Christmas, we always drive the two and a half hours to Tulsa to be with my dad’s family. It has always been that way, with no changes (my late mom’s family used to be our Christmas Eve visit - they’re mostly gone now) no matter what. I don’t mind the drive, especially since my cupping/massage therapy started a year ago. Long drives aren’t nearly as painful on my back now. Do you guys travel for big holidays? Or does everyone come to your house, or nearby?

I think that its great when families can share holidays and expand it. I hope that you have something nice planned for the actual Thanksgiving Day, sleeping in or watching a great show on the TV, or something special that you want for you. We usually gather with my husband's family in mid-December about an hour from here. The actual holiday we will have here in the city with our son and his family.

I like the thought of having a big family gathering like you’re doing, and then just immediate family the day of Christmas. We do go over to my sister’s house about two hours before the big family Christmas gathering to open presents we got the kids. It gives us a nice little chance to have our own private time since so much time at the big family gathering is seeing relatives we don’t see as much as my sister’s family. Tomorrow will be a fun day for me. Three football games, including your husband’s Lions will be played! The one in the middle of the day I will skip, and make myself a nice Dorito chicken dish, go for a walk, and probably check in on Mylot. I’m looking forward to it. Of course, not as much as Saturday with the kids.

@Juliaacv Yes, you need to put yourself first for a while so you can continue to be there for everyone else. Self care is especially important for those so many people depend on.

@AmbiePam That is great, you have the day all planned out. I forgot that the Lions are playing tomorrow, although I have been reminded countless times. I am planning on taking the day for myself. I feel tired as I have gotten up as early as I do when I work this week, and do not feel refreshed just yet. I need a day to be lazy, the girls are fun and all but at their age they still require alot of care. I look forward to a quiet day to not get dressed until I want to and to indulge in the second cup of coffee in the morning. I think that it sounds a bit selfish, but I just need some quiet downtime.

I go to family's homes but they are all within like 20 minutes of here so it doesn't feel like "travel". One year my ex and I went to Asheville, NC for Thanksgiving. We drove 12 hours through a snowstorm. It was awful. (the travel not spending time with them) After that we flew to visit them.

@AmbiePam It was crazy. My ex drove the whole way Darwin love him. We went overnight so I slept for some of the time. I remember being freaked out though when I saw the runaway truck ramps in North Carolina. By that point it was snowing and I was ready to just get there.

That's great you can handle long drives now! If we got out to MIL's senior home for a family get together, it's about an almost 2 hour drive is all - I wouldn't consider it travelling since we come home same day. Otherwise we used to have all the gatherings at my parents - only a 10 minute drive away. But since my father passed away a couple years ago, things with my sister have become extremely awkward - she no longer even checks in on my mom . . . so this year for the first time I'm doing Tday at our house - with only my mom invited.

And only your mom should be invited if that’s the way your sister has decided to be. None of you need unnecessary drama.

November used to be my Mom's birthday time. Huge groans and curses from me when anybody invited me to drive over the mountains to her birthday party. I am not a fan of most of my family plus managing slippery roads is just not for me. These days we stay home- Christmas day a friend has started to invite us over but she lives maybe 4 miles away. I wish you well and joy in your family hooplas.

@AmbiePam She would certainly be welcome in mine! And you would as well, Amber. It would be cool to try to have a myLot gathering of sorts in various spots. It would be fun!

Now I always stay home since there is nowhere to go. However, even in Latvia, we celebrated all the holidays there at home. Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

I'm sorry you won't be celebrating Thanksgiving on the actual day but I'm sure you'll enjoy it on Saturday. What's a few more days anyway. My daughter only lives 5 minutes away so I wouldn't exactly call it traveling for Thanksgiving. Christmas is at my house along with pretty much all the other big holidays.

We generally do see family around those days but not necessarily on the day itself.

It's going to be relatively small tomorrow. We still don't know what the kids are doing. But I've got the turkey in the oven, and some prep work done.

on Eid we visit my grandma the first day, but we're like 5 minutes away from each other. the next day we used to visit my mom's dad and the rest of the family that like like an hour and a half away. so i guess we were the ones that traveled because it made the most sense

It all depends . Sometimes I travel and sometimes I do not. Unless I have atleast 4 continuous days for myself, I would prefer to stay back at home and complete some activity at home . I would also get some rest from the work and all other stressful things. However, if i have 4 days or more I do plan to travel and well I do like driving upto 500 kms or less. There could be niggles and bodyaches but then with a good sleep and rest , most goes. Plus , in the travel mode , most of these things does not even come to mind and we get immersed onto the destination. Glad to read your routines during Thanksgiving. Enjoy the day!
