In years gone by door knockers were fashioned with care because they often indicated the wealth and status of the household. Many have symbolic meanings such as good luck or even protection.
The bumblebee door knocker symbolizes brightness, community, and personal power. It will bring good luck to the home for years to come.
They were originally made from cast iron until the Georgian period when brass took over. In the Victorian Era that part of the door was covered so the knocker did not sound and disturb the family during times of mourning or illness.
I enjoy looking at doorknockers at estate sales and have seen some rather odd ones down through the years. I have never lived in a house with a door knocker on the front door. Have you?

Oh they are so very interesting and I love this one you have shown. Course when I lived in England, they were more prevalent..old you know.

We had a door knocker at our last house but it was just a plain one. Here the front door is mostly glass, so not space for one. Like you I like spotting interesting knockers and other 'door furniture' as it's called!
I really fancy one of those old-fashioned bells with a bell-pull though!

We've never had a doorknocker. I love the owl one in the picture. Have a good weekend.
