Oops - the milk has expired! What can I do with it?

Milk

We opened this milk can a couple of days ago and realised that it had expired over the weekend. I don't think I checked the expiry date we'll before we purchased it. We had 2 more cans, so the coffee and breakfast went ahead as planned. Do you know what we can do with expired milk. It's not curdled or smelling bad.

I would probably throw it out if it was more than 8 hours past its expiration date.

@porwest Usually I will look at the color and consistency apart from the expiration date.

The expiration date has NOTHING to do with freshness. It's the last date a store can sell it by. If the milk smells fine and is not curdling, it's good.

If it is not curdled or smelling bad, forget the expiring date and use it soon.

I'm tempted to do that too.

@pitstop I always do that. I place a drop on my index, lick it. If it tastes like milk, I drink it all. If it is curled, Luna gets it. And she does not get ill. My grandma used to make cheese with curled milk but I´d rather buy cottage cheese or the like.

@pitstop You will not get sick because it's not bad. The expiration date has nothing at all to do with the freshness. I know I am repeating myself. But for good reason.

If it's not curdled and smells okay, just keep using it.

@pitstop I'm sure there is no risk as long as it smells and tastes okay.

You probably can use it if it doesn't smell bad. Have a good week.

Not sure exactly. I don't think I'd drink it. I'd probably bathe in it.

Just for future reference, the expiration date has absolutely nothing to do with the freshness. It's a "sell by" date. I have used eggs several weeks past expiration and there is nothing wrong with them. I also worked in the food industry, having worked for Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods, and Nestle—so I know a bit about what expiration dates actually mean and who they are for. Hint: They are not for you. lol

If it is not curdling or smelling bad, it's good. You can use it exactly as you would any milk. The expiration date is more to do with the last date it can be sold than when it goes bad. If it smells right and otherwise there's nothing wrong with it, it's as good as any milk before the date will be. The only different thing I'd do is use it faster.
