Kids these days

Seasonal not so jolly at my house. I have a rather funky front gate latch. It works but the delivery folks must stop for a second to get the job done well. Yup. Last night around 9 pm hubby and I were listening to a chapter of the Wind in the Willows. Pups outside. Suddenly it hit my brain: too quiet outside. Yup. Gate wide open and not a pup in sight. Oh my aching gut. I am not super at night driving these days. I got in the car and drove the neighborhood. Did not hit any parked cars. Did not find any pups. I went home and walked some. Nope. Drove some more. Nope. I finally sat in my recliner and read more of a very good but sad book that digs into the Hitler years. Oh bleh and horror on horror. I dozed and read and went to the front porch. Hubby went to bed. I could not go to bed. I sat in my recliner and dozed. About 3 am I heard something besides hard rain. Two very wet pups stood there- we'd left the door and gate open. Just in case. Oh thank you Lord and Lady. Today we have two very tired pups. And me sitting around reading and dozing. There is a lake not too far from me and China creek. Rufus loves water. Moxe no thank you. Now every time we get a delivery I must double check the gate latch. I am deeply grateful neither dog was harmed in this night time romp.

That's so good that at least they came home on their own. There are no stray dogs here but I spotted a personless one at the front gate to our village. I recognised it as our friend''s dog so was able to return it to her. It had escaped too.

@JudyEv That was good of you to help the dog. Sometimes it takes a village to keep everyone safe.

@sallypup There are petty squabbles from time to time but when something happens everyone jumps in to help.

They gave you quite a scare. I am glad that you got them back again. I remember our Nayla did that to us decades ago while she was still alive. Our son was just a boy, and he was so heart broken, he couldn't eat his supper, so he took his plate with supper on it and sat it on the front porch in front of the door. The next morning when my hubs got up at 5:15 to go to work he turned on the front porch light and noticed some activity out there, and there was Nayla sitting proudly in front of the plate, now empty, on the porch waiting to be let inside.

@sallypup That was probably about 25 years ago, but it did make us, as parents, realize how much he loved his dog, Nayla.

@Juliaacv Your poor loving son. Dogs can be such rascals.

It seems that until the pups grow up, you will have to check the gate when there is a delivery. You were lucky to have the puppies back. Today Sofía´s dog went for a trip to the neighborhood and there was a mayor crisis at the house until they found him. I´m glad that Luna learned to stay inside my garden because she was a pup during the Covid quarantine.

@allknowing I am grateful to all the Dieties. I am also grateful that my pups figured out where home was and didn't hurt on their expedition.

At least both found their way home. Unlike cats, you can't keep dogs in 24/7.

@kaylachan True though I try to keep the cats mostly indoors, about once a week our youngest cat goes nuts until he escapes outside for an hour or so.

They probably had a milky old time with no care you were worried sick. Pups can be like that.

I can only imagine the mix of relief and exhaustion you felt when those soggy pups appeared at 3 a.m. They must have had quite an adventure

@andriaperry Me, too. Rufus must have been running his cuteness off cause he has been napping most of the day. He's just starting to act normal.
