We had many cats once upon a time They stayed with us as long as they wanted and left without a trace.
That is how it is here with cats. They decide what suits them. Love, care and good food has nothing to do with when they decide to leave.
Earlier their attitude is to bother me but that is how every cat around here behaves. We have had cats that belonged to neigbours and refuse to leave us.
Accepance is the name of the game

Yeah, cats can be quite unpredictable when it comes to their favorite person. One would expect the favorite person to be the one who feeds and looks after them, but nope. Not necessarily. 
Maybe they got other priorities, like they prefer a calmer place or whatever.

maybe someone else decided to bring them home. but like you said - cats are like that, they go and do what they want.
