And then it happened . . .

Beep. . . Beep . . . Beep. . . I put my pillow over my head, and went to sleep as well as I could. It was one in the morning. The smoke detector was telling me it needed new batteries.I did not know that. We have lived here nine years.I thought they were hardwired into the electrical system We have never needed to replace the batteries. The detectors had a little green light. It eventually went out. When the improvements happened this summer we were given new detectors. In different places. Now I know better, and we can do better. This happened a couple of days ago. I thought up the title, and carried it in my head, but the discussion itself just poured out like sand, leaving my brain empty. I remembered this morning. Live and learn. They have done their job in the past, and detected carbon monoxide. No fires. Like I said. . . I thought they were hard wired into the house. I will have to check the other ones, now.

The new detector we bought came with a pre-installed 10 year battery.

We don´t use smoke detectors in my country. If we did, I would not have had the kitchen fire 2 years ago. Now that I´m reading your post I wonder if I might buy one online. Although I remember once, while in Aruba, that I was heating a skillet to make the sort of steaks I love (sealed in the outside and mooing inside) that the smoke detector went twice until I had to give up to a not so good steak.

I hate it when the battery gives up, so annoying.

Mine are wired in, but they still need batteries from time to time. the question is, what do they always start keeping in the middle of the night?

Are you still asleep or am I? I read your comment just fine, even with the typos.

@BarBaraPrz The Kindle has a tendency to be screwy, and when I am sleepy so am I.

9 years without having to change a battery does make it easy to assume they were hardwired

I have the same kind of alarm in my cabin & when it starts going off like that it's time to replace the battery so it will shut up.

We live in Housing and they check the detector's batteries each year when they do inspections. It is sure good to have these detectors.

Ugh. Ours is an annoying, sharp "chirp" every few minutes. I think they say to check the batteries twice a year, but of course we don't think of it and forget. Then come the chirps .

Here, everyone is encouraged to renew the batteries on April Fool's Day. I don't if any are hardwired in or not.

Ours are hard-wired into the alarm system which isn't working now because of our phone problem. I do have a separate carbon monoxide detector. Have a good day.

now you know what to do. i didn't know they had batteries either - but then again - houses rarely have smoke detector in Bosnia.

I don't have a smoke detector. If I had one, I guess it would go on all the time because I have this habit of lighting incense sticks.

I think most condos here have Smoke detectors. But we don't use one at home so I dion't know that some are not wired.
