It sometimes seems that the US has a love, hate relationship with fruitcake. There are fruitcake tosses, and flings. Some people love fruitcake and others do hate it. I like fruitcake, but in general I don't think it is worth the calories. It is highly caloric. I did buy one several years ago now that was made by monks. It was pretty good as fruitcake go, and almost worth the calories. I think fruitcakes have been made since the middle ages. Do you love fruitcakes, hate them...or are you somewhere in between?

I'm probably in between. I like it but don't buy it or make it anymore. When my kids were young I used to make fruitcakes at Christmas time and give out a few as gifts. I think fruitcake was more popular back then. I do agree that it's loaded with calories.

I am hoping I will stumble upon some at a holiday party somewhere, so I don't have to commit to a big cake. I don't want it around really

@Marilynda1225 Having a whole fruitcake around here would be a disaster for sure. I don't really have room to store it in the freezer either.

@snowy22315 I would enjoy a piece but not a whole cake. Hope you get some at the party

I only like one brand of fruitcakes. They can be very good or awful. At least the ones they make here.

I have noticed that the cheaper ones tend to dry out..and fruitcakes drying out is one of the reasons some people hate them.

@snowy22315 I don´t like some fruitcakes that have anise flavour. If they must add something, I´d use rhum as I did when I made them myself.

@snowy22315 I'm not even sure what all goes into it . . . I guess the various dried fruit can add up - and maybe some kind of liquor/liqueur?

I loved my mama’s fruitcake, They are not all created equal. I find some to be overly sweet.

The first time I got a taste of fruitcake was in the 80s when I was a kid. Of course when I heard cake, what came to mind was cake with frostings and all. So I told my mom I wanted to try the fruit cake. But I didn't like it at all. Not really a fan. Every time someone would gift us with a fruit cake, I'd just take a bite and then ignore it. Not a fan at all.

If I make the fruitcake, it will be moist, flavorful and have way too many calories. I won't touch fruitcakes that someone buys from a store/online service. We throw those away. (The one I make takes 30 days and you have enough stuff to make three of them.)

I made some fruitcake bread in an bread maker a few years back and it got overdone. I wasn't a happy camper because it was for Thanksgiving, and I spent a ton of money on ingredients..boo, hiss.

This Yule is the first time that hubby and I have not made fruitcakes. I'm sad about it but for many reasons we are not participating in what was a mighty big effort, work, time, thoughtfulness, gathering of dried fruits, nuts, grinding of wheat for flour. I kind of miss the time.

@snowy22315 Our fruitcake soaked overnight in honey and apple cider. Chopping all the fruits and nuts was a big deal. The next day we mixed in the butter and flour and eggs. Hubby buttered all the pans and lined them with wax paper.

I have not eaten them much. My christian friend makes fruit cakes for Christmas and she will give a generous share to our family. We get two cakes on Christmas every years from her....a plum cake and a fruit cake. I absolutely love it. She makes the best cakes. And it's worth the calories, as I eat it once in a year

@snowy22315 I agree. She loves to share her cakes whenever she bakes. She is a doctor by profession and so doesn't do it much due to her busy schedule.

I have never been a fan of candied fruit. It has a strange rubbery texture to me. If I am going to have a sweet treat, I would much prefer to have one that tastes better to me than fruitcake. I did make them for years for the grandparents and aunts and uncle’s. I honestly don’t miss making them.

I am not big on candied fruits either...like the cheap ones aren't very good. I want authentic dried fruits in one. I can think of better ways to spend 30 bucks and that is how much it would cost to make a good one. I don't know anybody who needs the calories either, well maybe friend, but he is diabetic so he doesn't need it either.

The cost of putting together a fruitcake is wild. Nuts, all that candied fruit, butter, and then add in liquor if that's the way you make it. One of my grandmothers used to make one fruitcake per year, for my grandpa and his brother to eat. This was made the ''old fashioned'' way of soaking the fruitcake in brandy for a time. My great grandmother used to make them this way, so grandma took over that job when she passed so they could have their fruitcake.

For me l am not in good terms with the fruit cakes. I would comfortable take the normal cakes rather than too much things attached to cakes for sure
