One of the lowest-peaking songs on the list shows up today, making you wonder how I heard these things. Well, back then radio stations played what the people wanted to hear. What was popular here wasn’t necessarily popular somewhere else. That’s how we had the Bakersfield Sound and regional stars. (That’s how I first heard Jimmy Buffett, too: on a country station in Daytona Beach, playing “The Great Filling Station Hold-Up.” Popular in Florida, not so much in Wisconsin.) So here’s today’s low-charting song from the country charts.
Wish I Was a Little Boy Again - LaWanda Lindsey
I heard this and said, “That’s me!!!!” I was a tomboy from the word go. I blame my brother. He wanted a little brother, and since he didn’t get one, he made me into the next best thing. I loved sports (still do) and hated dresses (still do).
So when a song came along about the joys of being a tomboy, I was on it like hair on a gorilla. Apparently I was the only one.
LaWanda Lindsey had a slight problem then: she sounded too much like Lynn Anderson. In fact, Anderson first recorded this as an album cut on her successful Rose Garden album. So when Lindsey released this as a single in 1972 (on the small record label Chart, which was another slight problem), people might have gone in search of a Lynn Anderson 45.
This song is about the pitfalls of adulthood that only an old tomboy can understand.
Wish I Was a Little Boy Again
Written by Glenn Sutton and Darrell Edwards
Recorded by LaWanda Lindsey
Released as a single, 1972
Peak chart position: #60
Today’s rock song: “You’re a Wonderful One”
The world of make-believe all too soon must end:

It was fun being a tomboy. I think it better prepared me for life. When I had my little 1981 Chevette I could change the oil in it!

@JudyEv — no, my dad went out rabbit hunting when I was a kid, and I learned the difference between Fluffy the pet and wild rabbit for stew.

@FourWalls I never messed much with mechanical stuff but I knew a lot about livestock. I could skin a rabbit (sorry if they're fluffy pets in your eyes), cut up a sheep carcass (more apologies) milk a cow, make butter - all sorts of stuff that's pretty useless nowadays.

@FourWalls I've had class coverages the past 2 days on my lunch. I'm not going to turn down that easy money.

Well, I am not aware of the song. But could find the similarity where radio plays songs on request. It was very much in trend back in my childhood days to dedicate songs to your beloved and loved ones with the message. People looked forward to hearing their names too. It still happens but no more it is exciting and popular.

i was waiting for your post today - and i love the song. i played it and started reading your discussion - and i had the same reaction -"that's me!!"
i also used to play with boys and we were "teenage mutant ninja turtles" with our little weapons. i was always Donatello
i hated wearing skirts/dresses because i had to be careful when wearing them and i wanted to run and do whatever my friends did... without them seeing my panties
but now i love dresses and skirts and i love having women in my company
"i was on it like hair on gorilla" - first time i'm hearing this and it made me laugh.
thank you for sharing

I’m so glad you can identify with this as well. And that’s one of those silly southern colloquialisms, like “ugly on ape.”

I know! And it’s buried deep in the pile of forgotten songs (along with LaWanda, who’s still alive but retired from music in 1979).
