Well I am watching the old documentary from 1964 about how Christmas was the darkest night for the poverty stricken parents and children in Kentucky.
Poverty persists in this region.
Why on earth doesn't help reach these people with all the advancements of today?
Hard to know of their suffering and surviving in one of the most beautiful scenic places on earth.
Though I am a pauper myself, I feel so grateful that I had not had to labor 10 or more hours a day in a coal mine, kneeling in water, and having to wheel the coal out, a ton of it.
A rich land of poor people.
Robbed of elements.
John F Kennedy campaigned there.
'Yonder' goes I. Have mercy.
A powerful documentary and so makes you think and be grateful.

There is much poverty and homelessness. I really don’t understand why something isn’t done about it. It is heartbreaking.

That is heart breaking. How's the current situation? The same? How come these people cannot get government assistance?

Yes, in rural areas, the people struggle. They do get some government assistance, but it is rare enough M.

That was a long time ago. Here is a link to 2016..yes there still is poverty in Appalachia, but more is being done than back in 1964.

Something should be done about them. No one should have to work in bad conditions or in poverty.

I am from Kentucky and live in Florida now. I lived in a little town in Ohio where at the time over half the town was from Kentucky due to factories opening there. Now that small town is no better than some of the towns in Appalachia. The factories closed and now they have to commute to Lima, OH for jobs. The same thing has happened in Appalachia..not only are factories closed up..we no longer need the amount of coal we use to. And even when coal was a big thing..the Owners of the mines didn't pay workers enough, and the mine owners built grocery stores and other stores and because they were close to the mine, the workers spent their hard earned money in the stores, and the owners got their money back. I have heard the stories from the people there. I will watch the video later, but this problem is not just in Appalachia it is all across America. People could have roofs over their heads, but the Regulations that are now in place makes owning property too expensive to own OR rent. Between the regulations of the EPA, Zoning laws, building regulations, it has almost become impossible to Own A Home unless you make over $100,000 a year. Some regulations are good, but for the most part...Just a way to grab our money and support the rich who make money off the parts needed to meet the regulation. You would think sooner or later they would get tired of scratching each other's backs and packing their wallets. Nothing against earning money and being able to do with it what you want..but using the Govt to Make that money is just WRONG! Sorry, just needed to rant a bit. I feel for the people in Appalachia, but can't say that ALL of them are unhappy with what they have. They live in a beautiful part of this country. They can hunt and fish for survival. Plenty of prey in those mountains. The Govt. pretty much leaves them alone for the most part. No they don't have all the amenities of a City, but they don't have the Bad stuff Cities bring. They take care of each other...or DID when I was growing up. I sometimes wish I could go back there, but at my age and with the medical problems I have, not possible. I hate the hussle, bussle, Noise and crime of the City.
