I guess it could be considered to be a good habit or a terrible habit, but then that would depend on one's perspective, that when I do covers of songs, a lot of the time I like to put my own twist or take on them.
To me it's just more fun like that. Incidentally, I tend to be the same way in the kitchen most of the time. I like looking at recipes as guides, but not something to copy entirely, depending on the dish of course.
When I did my Boulevard of Broken Dreams cover, I mostly stuck to the actual song, but that's rare I do that.
But with Frosty the Snowman, which I rewrote the music to and recorded in 2016, I took a few liberties with it—some said it was funky. Others said it was jazzy. I guess no matter what it is, my family has enjoyed this one and that's all that matters.
For your pleasure or disdain, I present you with my version of this classic Christmas song. And here's an early Merry Christmas to my fellow myLot buds.

No. I just doubled my own voice. Her and I have talked about doing an actual recording of a Christmas song together. We've done a couple just fooling around, but never an actual recording—she did do Nights in White Satin though. I did the drum, bass and guitar parts and she sang it.

@LindaOHio We did that one a while back. Not a full on cover, but just us being silly.

Well that was different, I guess I'd say funky that is in a good way. I could picture Frosty parading around with his broom to this melody,

Not sure what inspires me other than I want to do a song. But the process varies depending on the song and whether it's an original song or a cover. I would say it took a few hours to write the music and then play it and record the parts—I play the guitar and bass and use a drum program to write in the drum parts, or sometimes use my midi controller.
This one was recorded in 2016 and my memory of doing it says I did this one in about 4 or 5 hours from start to finish.
As for arrangements, it depends on the songs as well. Intro, verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, chorus is one I use often. Sometimes there's a bridge. Sometimes there's an outro. Sometimes no intro...it just depends. But either way, it's always fun to do.
There are two original songs I did wherein the chorus has no words and is just an instrumental. It's fun to play around a bit as well and sometimes not exactly follow rules. lol
