Nutritional Sweetners

Sort of a oxy moron, huh? There are some sweetners that are healthier than others. Now I know that Stevia is very popular but in my reading I find that it can have some awful side effects. It can cause bloating, vomiting, and cramping. It can disrupt hormones and can impact the liver. For those that are sensitive to ragweed and such plants they may also be sensitive to this sweetner. But, the FDA says that if you only use Stevia in moderation they feel it is safe. I think that is dumb and I wouldn't personally use it. Now there are some healthy choices and here is my list: *honey. It can even protect against heart disease. *Maple syrup. This one also contains minerals such as calcium, potassium, zinc and iron.it also contains antioxidants. *Agave. Has the lowest glycemic index compared to other sweetners. *Coconut sugar. High in vitamins and antioxidants. What do you think? Which do you use. I am going to try the last one. I already use honey.

I always clarify that I mean ''real'' maple syrup, as so many think of the pancake syrups that are processed. Also, please don't overlook molasses as a sweetner, it can truly be delicious. I love using dark brown sugar, as well--it has a distinct molasses flavor, but the sugary texture. I use the Agave as well at times.

Dark brown sugar is tasty. I haven't used maple syrup much. It is good too.

@celticeagle The less refined a sugar is, the better for you...well, you know. Sugar isn't good if you eat too much of it, no matter what, but white sugar is the most refined of all, and most of us all eat way too much of it.

Honey is a very nice and smooth sweetner.

I tried coconut sugar. Didn't do anything for me. Molasses used for sweetener in cocoa is super tasty. Fake sweeteners give my guts "a run for their money."

@MarieCoyle I'm with you. I wish I could get molasses in a bigger jar. Twelve ounces is stupid.

I love molasses. I feel like it’s an underrated and unappreciated flavor that is simply delicious.

I sometimes use Splenda when I'm baking instead of sugar.

I've tried stevia but didn't like it at all. I use honey in my tea when I'm at home or at Juanita's (I got her on to it) but use sugar when I'm out (unless they offer honey of course). I don't like the taste of any of the artificial sweeteners. Oddly enough though, I can't taste it in chewing gum. I wonder why that is...

I don't use Honey very often, but I find streight up sugar is worth it and I don't believe in artifical replacents. Honey is good because it's natural and pasturized.

@celticeagle Same. I get why they came up with fake stuff, but it's not worth it. You're better off with the real deal.

I drink diet soda with aspartame; but in moderation. I wish they would come out with safer sweeteners; but companies don't want to pay the cost. Have a good day.

I can't tolerate many sweeteners. They can be worse than sugar, at least for me.

I do a lot of research on them first. I am going to stick to the ones I mentioned.
