Flowers prayers and waste...

We Indians use flowers to appease god - Imagine I make Pony extremely miserable forcing him to hit a full bottle ...and then I go to god and give him a flower with my left hand under my right hand elbow....sounds saintly does it not.... Well, I stopped being a saint ages ago... I realized that we no longer live in joint families where one person prays ritualistically and rest do the "dry prayer"...meaning no fresh offerings, including flowers. Just fold your hands bow in front of god, tell him, if you don't do this for me, look what I am gonna do to you...eat some offering sneakily and push off to college or work..whatever. Yeah...those were the days...but with nuclear families....everybody gets to be the main prayer and that means we need more flowers!!!! There is nothing wrong with flowers, they are beautiful...and their presence in the house or surroundings should make us feel good. I am not speaking of those who sadistically separate the petals of roses thinking they can create something more beautiful than god. Our Hindu god said somewhere that you just have to offer one flower, one fruit, to me to make me hear you... That is forgotten and lots of flowers ...garlands...go on deities at home as well as in temples. In fact, I put a garland on Sai Baba's neck the other day, and oh boy, was I thrilled. Nevertheless, I carry a guilt. We live in a country where some regions do not get enough water. Farmers fight, states fight. We live in a country where many people sleep hungry. We live in a country where sewers are small, and flowers and garlands of the previous day find their way in them, especially during rains, clogging them. Even if people redeem their conscience by putting it on tree, hoping for it to become some fertilizer. So.... me abstaining from using those flowers ..........possibly feeds somebody. Possibly keeps mosquitoes and such things away.......I agree that flower sellers need employment...but what is wrong if the water remains in the farms where these people get to work and get reliable crop since water supply would be more reliable. I am just concerned about this ...as well as periodically pulling the mango leaves for festivals and decorations. We Hindus have just lost it. Nowadays we have fewer trees. We need them to clean environment. The Oxygen factor. I cringe when I see educated people failing to realize the effect of nuclear families and growing population on the diminishing numbers of mango plants. In the past, it was necessary to prevent spreading of fires....since nobody was cleaning up the area, so we had this system. Use it to pray to god ...put it in river or pond...it decomposes.........but does not cause fire. Being ritualistic without understanding the science behind it....somehow I am not ok with it. Are you ritualistic?

One of the saner persons..LOL I have similar feelings about lighting lamps...LOL. In ancient days we lit oil lamps. Now, we use electrical lamps...so why do we need the oil lamps again? To reduce cost, we use lower quality oil. Is it needed, is what I ask...but well....you know how things are...LOL

@anya12adwi Seems like we take pride in not thinking!!! Was looking at the Sri Lalitha Rice bag the other day...filled with mud and manure....the picture on the bag..Goddess Lakshmi...and then they make a hue and cry about Cardi B coming up with multiple hands like Goddess Durga...seriously...we are confusing the world...what is ok and what is not. I have never heard of Mother Mary Rice, Mother Mary butter...or Jesus fireworks...

Traditions are always sacred my dear...issues are over flaunting. We have god's images on rice bags, and that goes straight into dustbin. We have god's pictures and symbols on wedding invitations or house warming invitations...they too land in dustbins...for rats to eat...and we have calendars with gods...as it is we have many gods. Our shop hoardings have gods on them...those are not traditions...they are manufactured traditions ... as to flowers...nowhere in scriptures has it been mentioned that put garlands around me...but people do. Forget gods, we do it our leaders too, without knowing whether they raped somebody or not. We do it to film personalities, and games people...all that is soooooooooooooooo new to the scriptures.... that it cannot be called tradition. So...would you give just one flower to god in the morning as asked in scripture and give a huge bouquet to a political later just a few hours down the lane? Isn't that telling god, you are not as important... So with that kinda usage of flowers, that has emerged, aren't we actually starving some people? You tell me.

The wastage and garbage outside some temples is sometimes very disappointing.

If you get the logic behind the ritual, you will realize that they were extremely relevant in the gone by era, and absolutely irrelevant now. Back then, people could not go too far, from their living place, thanks to the number of chores, and limited facilities. So they grew coconuts, and mangoes and the like around their homes. To prevent spreading of fire, they opted to remove the leaves, before they dried up...so more number of mango trees, with only fresh leaves, that do not burn fast, if at all. We are now following Gregorian calender. Back then, calendars were different, effectively, ensuring that such rituals were observed in the right weather conditions. Even the coconut...in ancient days, its leaves were used to make the roof, baskets, and the bark, some rope. The advantages of the coconut tree were unmistakable. But possibility of one of the coconut falling on the head was high. So why not get the raw ones to drink, and dried ones offer to god. The dried one would also serve some firelight... They used to think. Nowadays, most Hindus have developed heard like mentality.

I am not ritualistic. It's sad when people don't have food to eat.

When we go into the temple, and not think about the headlines of the morning, we have shown immense degree of inhumanity we are capable of to the god. How then, can that god bless me?
