Firefighters in Connecticut rescue a dog that was at sea

The owner of a dog is grateful that the Branford firefighters came to the rescue of his dog who jumped into the sea in the Pine Orchard/Limewood Road area on Tuesday December 17.
The Branford Fire Department firefighters answered the emergency call from either the owner of the dog or an eyewitness who used a boat to rescue the dog and take him to shore.
After the successful rescue, the dog was taken to a local animal hospital where he was checked out by a veterinarian and returned to his owner who did enter the sea in an attempt to rescue his pet before the firefighters were able to rescue the dog.

I wonder why the dog jumped in, and it obviously was unleashed at the time.
People should keep their dogs leashed at all times, to avoid such mishaps from happening. The owner took a big risk to try to save his dog too, as he could have needed rescuing then too.
