My Y2K New Year's Eve memory

Younger members may not get the Y2K reference but when computers were invented they were programmed to just do years with the last 2 digits of the year--like today is the last day of 24. There was a huge fear in 1999 that everything electronic would stop working when the year switched to 00. It was a serious concern for many. . .
. . . I was 23 at the time and out partying at the Bamboo (famous local Seaside club) and drinking/dancing the night away. I was talking about this with the young teacher who shares my classroom the other day. I don't even know if he was born at that time. Anyway I did my thing and I remember thinking at like 3am when they turned the lights on "well I guess the world didn't go to hell". Somehow I got home (who knows how) and went into the house via the back door which was always unlocked.
My parents weren't big partiers but they did host one for the Millenium. I got into the house at like 4am and found leftover food EVERYWHERE. It was a drunk person's dream. I had Crab Oscar, Darwin knows what else, but I definitely remember eating scoops of homemade whipped cream straight from the bowl. I knew that my mother must have been hammered if she left everything out like that. It was an amazing find in my state that morning though.
Sure enough my mother spent the entire New Year's Day on the couch. At one point she told my dad to feed her a cracker because she couldn't find her mouth. Hilarious for me. Not so much for her and her hangover.

That's hilarious but I'm sorry your mom was so hung over. I remember waiting for my computer and my camera to turn to 2000...they both recorded the new year without a problem. So much for Y2K. Happy New Year!!!

I have had drunken New Year's Eve and quiet ones and one where I drank a whole bottle of champagne by myself, Whoopee! However the very best were all with my hubby back in Latvia and every midnight all the neighbors gathered on the street and watched the sky light up with fireworks, Glad for the memories, Bob Hope just came into my mind Thanks for the memories

I didn't buy into the hype. My computer was used and barely working at the time. How it lasted as long as it did is amazing in and of itself.

Y2K was definitely memorable and crazy. Your post brought back some of the panic I recall. A college professor friend and his wife were convinced the grid would go down and there would be no power for a long time. They bought two gas generators, endless gas cans and filled them up with gas, enough food for a year, garden seeds, and every single battery they could find. It was a crazy new year!
