The New Year has begun and well it is all about new hopes and wishes for the next 365 days.
My Dad used to avoid any purchases or expenses on the first of January. He believed that expenses on the first day of the year means huge expenses in the upcoming days. He did delay any purchases or expenses for the next day when the first of the year used to arrive.
For me, I avoid work on first of Jan. In case, there is no holiday, then I take a day off. I also used to skip college when it used to be working day on the first of Jan. Again, another custom - I used to have Pizzas for my dinner on every first of Januarys. No particular reason or belief, it just stuck with me.
So, what are the traditions or customs you generally follow on first of Jan?

My parents believed that a person should eat corn bread (which I like) and black eyed peas (which I can't stand) on New Year's Day for good luck. I don't do either of those things. Dad also said that a person should work on the first day of the year to ensure you'll work the rest of the year. I don't do that either. When I was still working a job, I always got the first day of the year off and now that I don't work outside the house, I only do what is necessary to have a good day on the first of the year.
I hope, whatever you choose to do today, you'll enjoy yourself.

I was not aware of the tradition with corn bread and black eyed peas . I too avoid work on New Year day. Would prefer a relaxed 1st Jan than a tensed and working 1st Jan. Thanks for sharing!

I don't observe the new year on January I. I celebrate the day on Varsh Pratipada. However I have many Christian friends. I wish them happy new year on 1st of January.
