Every year we go through the cycle of losing people in the world of music, and every year I’ll recognize them for the happiness they brought to people’s lives with their music. Many of these people never get the “headline news” coverage at their deaths, so I remember them every month, then choose those that meant a little more to me personally. Here’s today’s entry from the 2024 farewell list. Tommy Cash Hey, he looks a little like Johnny Cash! And you play the video and you think, “Hey, he sounds a LOT like Johnny Cash, if the record was playing a little too fast.” He did, and for good reason: he was Johnny’s youngest brother. He never asked Johnny’s help with his career, because he didn’t really need it. Unfortunately, he was pegged with the curse of looking like Johnny and sounding like Johnny. He also had his greatest success with topical songs (his biggest hit was “Six White Horses,” about the assassinations in the 60s) at a time that Johnny was doing the same thing. As his career faded he became a real estate agent. He sold his brother’s house to Barry Gibb for his best-known sale. The announcement of his death barely caused a ripple on the news, except for those of us who remembered his music and him as more than just “Johnny’s brother.” Tommy Cash Born April 4, 1940, Dyess, Arkansas Died September 13, 2024, Hendersonville, Tennessee (unknown cause) (age 84) Carl Perkins wrote this song that Tommy had a hit with in 1970, “Rise and Shine”:

That was a tearjerker, and he sounded more like Johnny on that one IMO.

If you slow the YouTube video down by 1/4 it’s almost identical to Johnny.

I don't care for Rise and Shine; but there are some of Johnny Cash's songs that I like such as Ring of Fire. Have a good day.

Tommy didn’t have the diversity in style that Johnny had, certainly.

I don't know him..but yes can relate to that. There are people in music and film industry here too who did not get their due recognition because of the family they came from. Though entry into the industry becomes easier if you have your kin there, the journey and success becomes tougher because of such comparisons and high bar of expectations.

It was the same for people like Crystal Gayle, who never got the level of success as her sister, Loretta Lynn, or LaCosta, who was the sister of Tanya Tucker but never made the hits the way her sister did. Sometimes having a famous relative is a help, and sometimes it’s a major hindrance. Tommy stood on his own; and, to his credit, he never begged Johnny for help, nor did he have the arrogant “Hey, I’m JOHNNY CASH’S BROTHER, I demand attention!” approach. He made his music and he lived his life. That’s not always easy when you’re the brother of a legend.

@FourWalls Totally understandable. It can come with it's own set of challenges and hindrances. The success and stature of one can totally overshadow the other one

That’s the one that everyone goes back to. I like this one because it’s more upbeat, but “Six White Horses” has a lot of truth to it that we sadly need to keep revisiting.
