Avian flu is in my area, very concerning.

You may remember, I live near two lakes, there is also a pond/very small lake out my back door, maybe 100 yards away. I have also posted in the past about the incredible amount of Canadian geese we have in our area here. They really do not migrate, which is surprising as our winters here can be very harsh for wildlife, but none of them leave anymore. People are finding dead geese in a lot of places close to me. Last night on our news, they said it is not recommended to walk near the places the geese hang out, not to pick up or touch dead geese, etc. However, there has to be 5 of them before they can be picked up by authorities? That's just weird. The dead birds they have tested have died from bird flu. It's way closer than I want it to be!

Ugh, that is scary We have Canadian geese here too, but not in great numbers. Most of the waterfowl in the lake are regular ducks .and some heron.

We have a few ducks, and the occasional heron, but in the winter, only the geese stay. Scary, indeed.

We have ducks around here. There are shorebirds also. I try not to come in contact with any of them.

@thedevilinme Birds go everywhere, they poop everywhere, no one can be completely safe from contamination. So, so very concerning. And you are right.

Any percentage of kill ratio is not good, but that is high.

@MarieCoyle I don't know how people could get infected. We should have enough sense to leave well enough alone.

@kaylachan People can be infected with Avian flu, and then there is the cat and dog thing...if they are in and out, and get infected, they can bring the illness into the house.

That sounds scary. I think the authorities should gather up all the geese and isolate them somewhere, I suppose that's had to do but it should be done,

It would be impossible. There are currently over 200 geese I can see from here, out my back window. And that’s just one little spot out of many!

Be very careful and try not to come in contact with the geese or other birds. Avian flu is dangerous. I'm sorry it is in your area. Avian flu is spreading to other animals like cattle and cats. There are Canadian geese in the Rochester area in NY. I have heard that people catch and eat them even though it is illegal. I hope those people will be okay.

@MarieCoyle Do you think you can catch it by being near a lake? I can walk to a small lake near here. I go and take photos of birds or whatever is there, trees and reflections are good too. I want to sell my photos eventually. I have no desire to be sick with that evil virus. I wonder if I should stay away. There is a pond beyond our patio.

We have an incredible amount of Canadian geese here. There always was a lot, but now they are everywhere. I will not be going down by the lakes anytime soon!! I don't want to be sick with the Avian flu.

Yes, a lot of people shoot and eat them, whether or not they are supposed to. They are a protected bird.

Maybe a half year back, our water areas had signs up that high levels of avian flu were found there. But I don't know what became of that because the signs were taken down since . However, cases ARE around. We have lots of Canadian geese and others that hang out here all year round - it's never real "winter" here. And people keep feeding them, which they are not supposed to - these birds probably have no need/want to migrate. Birds and such are all around us - I don't know what can be done exactly - but we never wear our outdoor shoes inside the house for one.

We do not wear our outside shoes in the house, either. It saves a lot of work. We have real winter weather here, but the geese never leave. I often wonder how many of them even survive when it gets way below zero and stays that way for days, but somehow they do.

I don't know of any. Wild birds go everywhere...and I would hate to see them all die from this, or all be killed due if it gets worse.

@allknowing I do know there is no vaccine yet. As to how to keep from getting it, I don't think there is a way to protect ourselves from it completely. There is this article, if it helps.

There is just to many people, when you get this populated mother nature always has a built in clause to make it more fair. Why I wonder if half the people making the laws even understand how nature works. That being said, still smart to pay attention and for people to control what they can so they and their family stay healthy. If people to choose otherwise then thats on them.

@MarieCoyle This is an interesting time to be alive and witness all this but it is getting too difficult to comprehend. You never know what will happen next. I am wondering if the fog people are talking about is to spread diseases. It seems to me that someone or something is interfering with our sources of food. It is getting weird.

Hopefully, since it is really cold and snowy, people will not walk in the areas the birds like to congregate. Avian flu is a very serious illness, for sure.
