Is addiction to coffee detrimental as being addicted to drugs or alcohol?

I like coffee. However, I do not have a situation where I cannot live without coffee. That’s not the case with a few people I recently got acquainted with. I understand they have deadline pressures and perhaps life challenges- but what I noticed was them drinking around 10 cups of coffee in a single day! Not once but for over a week. I initially thought it was some other beverage or perhaps soda, only to realize later it is coffee. They even skipped food for coffee. I have every reason to believe they got addicted to coffee.
I cannot confront them on coffee addiction. There is nothing illegal about coffee addiction, neither there are withdrawal challenges (I have not heard of any!). The only thing I can think of less sleep due to excess caffeine in our bodies or perhaps increased heart rate. While coffee addiction and its severity are yet to be studied properly, I think there could be similarities between coffee addiction and substance addictions. Perhaps there is no impairment of our cognitive capabilities or they are known to be life threatening.
Do you addiction to coffee detrimental as being addicted to drugs or alcohol?

it's a special kind of addiction as well. i remember my sister not getting her morning coffee fast when we were on one day trip 10 years ago; she was so nervous. she drinks coffee 3-4 times a day but she looked disturbed then. i'm nervous when i don't get my tea but under special circumstances, i would wait and be patient.

Not at all, coffee is a major antioxidant and is good for your brain and heart. My grandparents were both heavy coffee drinkers and lived until their mid 90's

Coffee would have its merits . However , if we look 3 or 4 cups per day or more , then I guess these days there are challenges. Interesting fact about your Grandparents. Perhaps there are more things to be studied on coffee. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! 10 cups of coffee a day? That's killing themselves.
I cant start my day without coffee but i guess i can drink 2 cups per day and if i have too much work to be done i guess 4 cups is enough. By 10? OM!!!! That's insane.

Well, I guess your drinking is within the limits and cannot be classifed as addiction . Thanks for sharing!

I can't drink coffee because it makes me sick. I am addicted to caffeine and drink diet colas every day. I tried to stop drinking them but I always start again. I guess that makes me addicted. The only thing is that it is legal, I can buy it a lot of places, and the police won't be searching my house or car for it. I think it is bad but I can't stop.

Well, if you feel you are addicted to caffeine and colas , suggestion would be decrease the quantity slowly. If you are drinking 3 cups a day , make it 2 cups a day for first month , then 1 cup a day for next , then 1 cup on alternate days for month and then try to stop. Sudden stops may not help , but this approach has worked for many. Good luck! and Thanks for sharing!

My mother used to drink alot of coffee. But now she only drinks one cup a day. I tried to drink black coffee, but I couldn't handle drinking it. I do like the smell of it though. I do think some people could be addicted to it.

i don't think it can compare to addictions you mentioned here just because people never "lose their mind" or start "seeing double" or making mess after drinking too much coffee. it's not good, but it's not as scary as the others

That is a good point. Too much coffee can never make problems iwth our cognitive ability. Nor it can get scary as the substance addiction. Thanks for sharing!
