Has this happened before?

Kamala Harris is the first woman to become the VP of the United States. She is also the first woman to certify the presidential election results, a race which she ended up losing. Has this ever happened before where a VP ran for president, lost, and then had to certify the results?

There was a lot of things wrong with the 2024 election. She didn't offically run, not really. You see, she was basically pushed into it when Biden dropped out six weeks before the elections. She wasn't even voted in as the nomnie, yet the country ran with it. Just because the left needed a canidate.

What happened this election is crazy. Biden should’ve never run for president again. And Harris should’ve never been put in his place without the American people actually voting for her.

That was one thing that really bothered me. The party screaming about Trump being an existential threat to democracy, UNDEMOCRATICALLY GAVE a nomination to someone without ANY democratic process.

@porwest I don't know how she suddenly became their canidate.... because she wasn't elected or anything. It's like we need a face for the party and we don't have time to do things the right way.

Al Gore had to do that in 2000.

It's new to me. I think another reason she lost was that she is a woman. Sad but men just can't take it. Pretty comical really. It was a weird situation. I hope we can get a woman in there at some point.

I’d love to see a woman president one day but only if she is a great candidate to run the country.

@lovebuglena Agreed. As a woman, I'm all for having the representation of our gender as a president one day. But what I think is wrong, is voting for someone solely because they are a woman, with little regard for who they are or their policies.

Hi back at ya. It was interesting to learn that this is not the first time a VP had to certify the presidential election that they lost.

Sure. To date, 49 vice presidents have run for president, with many not receiving the nomination. Six won the presidency and seven lost their races, meaning assuredly some of those 7 had to certify to their opponent. Aside from Harris, Al Gore was the most recent example.

What does it mean when they "certify" the results?

Not sure how to explain it. I guess they look at the final numbers and confirm that this is the official final count.

@Kamuigan hard to know what happens behind the scenes.

@lovebuglena It's interesting that they have the ability to do so, but rarely ever do. Guess it's harder for some of them to play nice.
