LA is having a terrible, dangerous fire.

When my son was finally done at the hospital after being there all day (sick, tests, etc) we finally got home about 8pm. I turned on the news while I fixed us some dinner...and it appears Pacific Palisides is hit so hard. Very strong winds. a lot of people left their homes but not everyone, it's very concerning and they expect the winds to reach 90-100MPH. I cannot imagine fighting a fire in the conditions those firemen are in. So scary, it's paralyzing! Hopefully, no lives will be lost, but from what I have seen on TV, that more than likely isn't going to be possible.

Hopefully enough people were able to flea in time.

I don't know if the authorities know that yet, some are not easy to get to.

@kaylachan We have some fires in the summers when it’s really dry and windy. But not like those, thankfully.

I just checked the KTLA website, they’re currently (1:20 PM eastern) reporting two deaths from the fast-moving fire.

Yes, I just heard that as well. An incredibly huge and terrifying fire!

@FourWalls I heard it's 10 deaths now, but the authorities seem to think it will be a lot more after they can search all the burned areas later.

I really hope people didn’t fool themselves into thinking they’d be okay if they stayed.

Santa Monica looks like a blazing inferno. The pictures on the news are horrific. I hope no one stayed, but one news source said that the fires started so fast, they couldn't imagine that everyone had time to get out. And it's spreading.

It's the winds that make them so dangerous. I could never live there, it would scare the ** out of me!

100 MPH winds with fire do not make a good scenario.

The fires have been on our news too. It's very devastating. And it's winter over there!

Yes, it’s winter here. But in the area of the fires it doesn’t get bitter cold. So many homes destroyed and so many with nothing and nowhere to go. Heartbreaking.

@celticeagle I try very hard to keep looking forward, not back--he's alive, he has all of his smarts, he can see and hear, etc. It's just that so many things were torn, broken, or shattered in that wreck....I am just glad it wasn't his head, or he wouldn't be here. Yes, some days are so hard. But we cannot give up. Not EVER.

Hope your son is doing better now! We live smack dab in the middle of the big San Fernando Valley, so we are away from the fire zones. But at one point a flank from the Palisades fire actually made it close to the edge of our Valley - if you heard about the hills of Encino. Thankfully they were able to block the fires to stop it from moving forward - so even though we are still relatively far, it was too close for comfort. We are safe . . . I feel so badly for those who have lost - homes and lives . Sorry I haven't commented until now - seeing some comments/posts making the fire situation into a "political" thing made me sick.

@MarieCoyle It is unbelievable to me too about how all of this has been politicized period - even more as each day passes . Since last week, there have been other fires - we are still safe - but they are somewhat local to us. Folks around these fires have had to evacuate or at least get ready for it. It can happen to any of us . There is one area where we have often driven through to get a particular beach . . . a busy, affluent community . . . it is UNBELIEVABLE that the fire destroyed all of it. So much more was burnt to the ground - and in other areas. They keep talking about rebuilding - I get that, but I just don't know about all the logistics. There are going to be huge stumbling blocks . . . meanwhile people do have to continue living. I hear/read about people saying these wealthy folks will bounce back, but in actuality, many of them are not rich. Heartbreaking no matter what.

@much2say No doubt the logistics, as you say, will be very hard to figure out. If you have the money but everything around you is rubble and is destroyed, and not going to be rebuilt, would you want to even build there again? And I suppose if a person tried to sell the land the home was on, they would either not sell it at all, or the price would be a very small percentage of the amount that they paid for it originally, or that it is worth, now. The sad part of losing a home to a disaster like this also includes those who have no homeowner's insurance at all. You have to have it of course, if your home still has a mortgage. Of course, if it's paid in full, the insurance is up to you. I have read that there are many people with homes that are paid for, but they cannot afford their insurance anymore, which is heartbreaking. Fire is so, so destructive.

That last comment you made is so true. It made me angry, too. It's about lives and homes and people. I am glad you were not in danger, but it does sound like it got close. That has to be a terribly frightening feeling, to know that you may have to evacuate. The pictures on TV were horrible...entire areas simply wiped out. I don't know that they can ever rebuild all of it, so many not only lost their homes, but lost their work places, their kid's schools, their entire lives, just gone. Heartbreaking.

@grenery8 It would be very hard to have everything you worked for go up in smoke, but for the people who lost loved ones, that’s the worst thing ever.

And more than that, even tougher to look at if you are directly affected. Tonight on the news, they told of a man who was on his break at work, and a news flash broke in to the station he turned on in the break room, and he saw his house burning to the ground on the news. I can't imagine how that felt for him.

They could end most of these fires if they got back to proper forest management. The reason California has so many wildfires is because of liberal environmental policies to protect everything except the people impacted by the fires this creates. If you don't remove the fuel, it will burn. Simple as that. I know it sounds harsh, or even inconsiderate to some degree. But can I really feel sorry for people who encounter dangerous situations they create themselves? It's really hard to.
