We were all wrong!

Today I was out with Big One, and we passed a van with the name ‘refusebodydoctors’ (sic) on the side. We speculated for ages over what service they might provide, because the name seemed so ambiguous. Was it body as in the human body – like medical doctors or physiotherapists? Or was it body as in vehicle bodywork? And was it ‘refuse’ as in ‘rubbish’, or ‘refuse’ as in ‘say no to’? And either way did that mean that they provided a rubbish service? If so why would they advertise that? Or did they just refuse to attend to customers at all? And if so how were they still in business? So many questions. Would you call them if you hurt your back or if you pranged your car? Would they be useless or just rude? We speculated about the possibilities all the way home. Then of course I had to look them up – and I found that they are specialists in the repair of rubbish collection lorries and other vehicles with hydraulic systems, such as waste compactors, hydraulic lifters, road sweepers etc. We thought of all kinds of possibilities but never thought of that! Of course the fact that we simply don’t cell them ‘refuse collection vehicles’ was the main confounding factor. If they had been called ‘bin lorry repairs’ it would have been perfectly clear! The picture is nothing to do with the post. I didn’t have a chance to get a photo of the van. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

People often have limited advertizing space, but that's why they have websites and phone numbers.

That’s a funny one. I would have been led to discover what they did as well.

There are often funny sigs. Even the lack of a comma can lead to confusion.

Funny speculations, though. Pretty and I often do that if we find some confusing signage along our travels. It helps pass the time.

Some things defy all logic. It's good you looked them up or you'd still be pondering over what they meant. I might have already told you about going off, as a teenager, over a sign saying 'Lots for Sale' and wondering why they didn't just say what they had for sale rather than just saying 'lots'.
