Free TV

Christmas 2025 came awfully early this year! Let me explain: Back when I was on vacation between Christmas and New Years, my boss had texted me and asked me if I wanted a tv. I told him I would get with him when I returned from vacation to get all the details. Well, I forgot about it, and I guess he did too, because he didn't mention it again until yesterday. So I asked him why he was getting rid of it, how much did he want for it, did it work, etc. etc. ect. Turns out the tv is practically brand-new. He bought it last summer, and over Christmas he saw an even better one he liked. So he bought another one, and asked me if I wanted the other one. He told me it would be free, all I had to do was come to his house and get it. Now, I'm not going to turn down free! So off I went this morning to his house to load up the tv and bring back to my house. And now I am the proud owner of a new Samsung 85-inch Neo QLED 8K smart tv. That sucker is a beauty, and the picture and sound quality are amazing! I went on Best Buy's website to look at the price of the tv, and I was floored that my boss would just give it to me for free. So now I feel really guilty that I am going to turn in my resignation on Monday, and quit that job. Have you ever been given anything of extremely high value for free? Excluding birthday or Christmas presents of course. Just out of the blue someone wanted to give you something expensive? And by the way, I was just kidding about quitting my job. I have no plans to leave where I'm currently working. But maybe I'll call out sick more frequently so I can stay home and watch movies and shows on my new tv! LOL

Congratulations on such a cool item! That’s awesome! I guess the most expensive item I got for free was a really nice queen mattress with bed springs. The parents of a friend had had it for three days when they were gifted a king bed. They knew I was looking around for a mattress, and gave me their new queen. I was so relieved as I didn’t have to wonder where I was going to get the money for a new mattress!

@moffittjc Yeah, that’s the stand up thing to do. It’s polite just to offer even though they’ll say no. You were raised like my dad. When that couple gave me that new mattress my dad offered them money, but they declined. I hope you enjoy the heck out of that TV

Good quality mattresses aren't cheap these days! You definitely received a cool gift. I would take a free mattress in a heartbeat if it was still new. I love the tv that my boss gave me, and the quality is amazing. I feel guilty that I got it for free, so Monday when I go into work I'm going to offer him a couple hundred bucks. I know he'll refuse it, but I'm going to at least make the offer.

@AmbiePam I have been playing around with it all day long. I didn't realize Samsung tv's come preloaded with hundreds of apps that you can access, and also hundreds of free tv stations to watch shows/movies.

What a generous guy, but he picked a great guy to give it to. I kind of wondered why you would quit right after the holidays, glad that you were just kidding. I used to belong to a website called freecycle. You posted items that were in good working order and gave them away to prevent them from going to the landfill, and to extend their life and you could ask for something if you saw it posted. I got a propane barbeque years ago, and yes, it worked. I also got an antique set of Christmas china. I love that set of dishes. And I gave alot of items away, especially after our son moved back home from living away while at university. Household items seem to go quickly, also his high school uniforms did too.

@moffittjc I agree. Before my mother passed away my brothers gave me her Royal Dalton good dishes. I didn't need them as I have my own and I reached out to a church in the area, as I was looking for a family that was new to Canada, just starting up, who would appreciate the dishes. There were 16 place settings and I gave them to them a few days before Christmas. I hope that they gather around their table together with their family and friends and enjoy a nice meal together.

@Juliaacv What a wonderful thing to do! I can imagine in my head the beautiful Christmas dinner setting with that dish set and all the food.

Before I went and picked up the tv, I did some early spring cleaning at my house, and I had tons of good stuff I wanted to get rid of but not throw away. Thankfully, there is a Goodwill donation center not too far from where I live, and I took everything there and donated it. I hate throwing anything away, and am happy to see things live on longer with someone else who needs it more than I do.

It's actually too big for my currently living room set up. I'm going to need a bigger tv stand a different set of book shelves bookending each side of the tv. So my free tv isn't going to end up being all that free after all. I need to buy more things to make it all fit in the living room!

I have a 55-in tv in my bedroom, and a 65-inch tv in my living room, so I thought that the 85-in tv wouldn't be that much bigger. I was wrong. The thing is huge, almost like a movie theater screen in my living room. It dwarfs the other tv I had in there.

@NJChicaa I remember when I had a 42 in tv and at the time thought that anything bigger would be too big. And yet the sizes keep going up and up and up. At what point do the tv's stop getting bigger? lol

@moffittjc A decade ago my ex and I partially finished the basement and turned it into a Man Cave so we could host parties. We bought a 50 inch plasma which at the time was huge. Like 2 months later he wound up ordering a 55 or 58 inch one to replace it. The thing was huge IMO. When I moved here I took the 42 inch TV that we had behind the basement bar. It is enough for me though it will need to be replaced soon. I don't have a TV in the bedroom and I never will.

I’m still on cloud 9. I spent all weekend playing around with it and seeing all the apps and channels that are preloaded. And the tv is connected through so-if, so I don’t have to have any cords or cables hooked up to it.

@DaddyEvil True, I did save a ton of money by not having to pay for that tv, but on the flip side I didn't need a new tv to begin with, so I wouldn't have spent any money at all regardless. But now I'm going to have to spend money for a new tv stand. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about it one bit.

It's more than 6-feet wide. I am going to need a new tv stand to fit it. And I'm going to have to rearrange me living room setup to accommodate its large size.

Oh wow! What a lovely gesture by your boss. we were gifted a cabinet which had been made especially for our friends. When they moved, they gave it to us. It is really quite special and I love it. I'm glad you're not resigning. That might have been a bit awkward.

I've never really received anything that expensive before either, except for when I bought my first house and my parents gave me a nice chunk of money to help with the down payment. Other than that, it's always been smaller value gifts.

Wow. A free 85-inch TV? Yep. I'd have been all over that. Currently ours is a 50" and while 85 might be a bit too big, for free I'd give it a go.

I thought the same thing. It really is too big for my living room, but since it's free I was not going to turn it down. It's going to take me a while to get the hang of using it, because it comes preloaded with like a thousand apps and tv channels, movie channels, and music stations. I've been doing a lot of scrolling on the menu trying to figure everything out.

@porwest I was reading a news story on Monday that said Roku is now in 90 million households in the US because most of the tv manufacturers are building Rokus into their smart tv’s now.

@moffittjc That might be useful for us. Right now we use a Roku to access all of our streaming and what not. If it was built in that might be easier, and I say might since I am not really a techie and it would probably be difficult to get used to it, as you say.
