My dad broke my closet

He was very angry because my neighbor said she had water damage because of us. He entered my room when it was a bit messy. I am trying every day to clean my room, but lately, I have been so sick and exhausted. I didn't have the strength to heat my food sometimes or to do the dishes. In some days even breathing was an effort. And talking was an effort too. My dad doesn't understand that I am depressed and I have several health issues. He said I was rude because my room looked like that. He started to offend my mom and broke the door of my closet at that moment. He started to offend everyone and he didn't have a trace of empathy or compassion. I am so disappointed because I tried so hard to make him proud. And I feel bad because I have such a father and I live with him. His yard is very messy, it looks awful. His garage isn't clean at all, but he knows to judge sick people because they don't have the energy to clean all the time. When holidays were here and we had guests I cleaned my room, but he just ignored this. I am trying so hard to not hate him. Now I will have to live with the broken closet because he won't fix it. I almost ended up in the hospital lately and I didn't need his behavior. I just want him to leave me alone and stop offending me in this way. I don't know what to do or how to tolerate his behavior.

A lot of people are sick, depressed or exhausted and still keep their personal spaces clean. I'll admit, I need to mop the floor, and our third bedroom is a dumping ground for George's meds, but I still wash dishes and do laundry. Even if you do one little thing at a time, you to can clean your room. And, this coming from a self-proclaimed slob.

I used to clean my room in this way, one little thing at a time. But now I can't find the motivation to do anything. Even surviving for a day is a huge effort and I wish I could sleep all the time. I feel overwhelmed. Many depressed people with major depression disorder can't clean their rooms or take care of their hygiene. They are stuck in bed and it looks like my depression becomes worse. Living in this environment doesn't help at all. I can't do anything without being very anxious. When I have progress I always have setbacks.

@dya80dya Progress and setbacks are part of the process and part of the illness. I am not saying your dad was in the right. He deffently could've have handled it better. But, I know that if you give up that's not good either. What you need to do, is work on goals and create habits. Have a hamper in your room and make a point to put dirty clothes in it. Or put your clothes in it when you change. It takes zero effort after a while and something you can do without thinking. Just like when you use the restroom its not going to happen overnight but it can be done.

I hope you and your dad can talk and reconcile. My dad broke my things when he is angry at me, kinda sad and hurt my feelings. But that was before. Sometimes parents have their own depression, i hope you dont give up on your dad.

I think he has depression. But my things are already old and I can't afford to replace them.

I am sorry things are so bad for you, I hope you can find a way to feel better soon. Is there a way you can lock him out of your room? How are your cats? Do they help calm you?

My cats are fine and they are trying to offer their support. I think this is amazing. Pets know better how to offer their support. And some people don't know this.
