The inside of a lighthouse

We had a tour of an old lighthouse that was partially still functional. We had a little session on the history and how it was constructed and then walked up some narrow stairs and a adder to reach the top and view the actual light. There's a series of brilliant lenses that we could see from the inside and an old bulb that could be turned on - the original was apparently a kerosene lamp. It was built around 1877 - can imagine the amount of work that went into the making of this structure!!
We visited several lighthouses when we did a coastal holiday over the weekend - expect a deluge of pics!

I have never seen a light house. The nearest beach is more than 350 kms from our town. I have been there several times; but there is no lighthouse in the sea.
However I'm curious to know about life in light houses.
