Every year a number of individuals in various fields of expertise pass away. I focus on music, because it’s my passion (and the only thing I really know anything about); however, this year, I am looking at notable people from other walks of life who said farewell last year. Here’s another one of the great newsmen from the past.
Charles Osgood
If you had no inclination to get up on a Sunday morning, Charles Osgood would give you one…to turn the TV on and watch Sunday Morning on CBS. It was partly news but mostly “magazine” style features, a soft counterpart to the more hard-hitting 60 Minutes that came later in the day. Osgood was the host of Sunday Morning for 22 years, succeeded another Charles — Kuralt — as host.
He frequently spoke in rhymes, though not at all times. He had a soothing baritone voice that was perfect for radio (where he started, and where he hosted The Osgood Files from 1967 until his retirement in 2017).
Another one of the great news fixtures of the past has left us.
Charles Osgood
Born Charles Osgood Wood III, January 8, 1933, New York, New York
Died January 23, 2024, Saddle River, New Jersey (dementia) (age 91)
HALL OF FAME: National Association of Broadcasters (Radio)

It is. It robs you of your loved one twice: once when they forget you, and once when they die.

I’ve said this before, too. Such a cruel disease. It takes the memories and leaves the shell.

He lived a long fulfilling life. Well, giving a reason to get up from your bed on Sunday morning has to be a very strong reason. May his soul rest in peace.

He did what he loved for decades, and that’s all anyone can ask out of life.

@FourWalls Very true. Many people keep cribbing throughout their life of being in a wrong job. He is amongst the lucky ones.

I could lie in bed for 90 minutes watching it.

I did too. Very “homey” and down-to-earth, which was exactly what that show needed.
