Many friend have asked me as to what is the real benefit of British rule. Was it really beneficial or they just looted the country and left,. The reality was quite different. In 1764 when the British Raj commeenced, India was divided into at least 20 countries and if the British had not come these 20 countries would continued to be in existence and in 1945 would have become independent members of the UNO. It is only the British who brought India under one umbrella and give it a sense of nationwood. That is the answer in a short article

The sense of nation hood for India existed earlier as well. The argument that If not for British we would be into 20 different countries is partially untrue. If our freedom struggle leaders wanted , they could just concentrated on few regions , which was never the case. British ruled in the Middle East and Malaya. Did they unite the nations ? no. They disintegrated into various countries based on tribes. However , India is different from all countries. We are diverse but culturally integrated and although we had independent kingdoms , we had been most times togerther (At time of Ashoka , we had more land under one Emperor than what British had got). The benefit from British rule were English and medical advancements.
