Broken wheel bearing

About a month ago the lights on my dashboard popped up. Service esc, Service abs, Service traction. I had been planning to go to a geocaching meet up two hours away one way. I decided it wasn’t a good idea to go to that. The lights went out for a few days and then came back on so I thought maybe just a weird sensor issue. The lights stayed on after that and I decided if I ever want to drive more then 30 miles at a time I better get it checked out. I had asked my husband to check to see if the brake fluid wasn’t leaking but he didn’t and after mentioning the lights on the dash many times and him not doing or saying anything I called the garage. Found out yesterday the reason the lights were on the dash is because I had a broken wheel bearing causing the abs system to shut off.

@sallypup over the past 10 years on potholes I broke the frame of one van and popped the tire and bent the rim on another.

@sallypup the pot holes are so bad. There are two on the highway in NY that are very deep and I always hit them. I bet that caused it. Everytime I have damage like that it winds up being due to the awful roads around here. My car is low so I don’t see them until I’m upon them.

@shaggin Those potholes are horrid. There are two good sized ones on the street not too far from me. My car is small, too, and I worry that I will damage something if I run into one.

Weird that could happen from a wheel bearing. I just had mine replaced when I got the car inspected

@snowy22315 yeah I had no idea anything was broken either. It’s burning oil for some reason too. He said it was down to 1 qt and he did an oil change and to keep an eye on it. $345 to fix the wheel bearing I wonder how much it will cost whatever is wrong why it’s leaking oil. It’s getting old it’s a 2011.

The lights are there as an indication that all is not well. You should not attend to the broken wheelbearing

@allknowing yep so I should have gotten it looks at as soon as they came on but it came on then went off for a few days and came back on which is so weird so I thought it was really just a sensor glitching or something.

@allknowing well I’m out with my son shopping today and the first hard breaking action all those lights came back on and I could feel the pedal go to the floor so the abs system definitely isn’t working. Gosh what will the problem be now!

Our first SUV had a strange noise coming from it for weeks, and I asked my husband to take it in for a diagnosis, but he waited too long The day that he was driving over to take it in, the back wheel bearings both went, thankfully he was in front of a garage and just pulled in there. That was when we needed to replace the vehicle, because when 1 goes the rest can too. We replaced it shortly after that when the noise came back.

@Juliaacv oh gosh now I learn this . That’s terrible news. My cars a 2011 and isn’t going to pass inspection in July so there’s no way I want to have to replace the other 3 wheel bearings. One alone was $345.

We had that last month. It also lost all the grease. When the mechanic got in to do the repair some amateur had done some stuff that he said he could not in good conscience stay, so we ended up with a bill around $450. Now the Mazda is happy.

@GardenGerty gosh it sounds good for your safety that he fixed the things the amateur did. Wherever you took it that an amateur did that kind of work I would never go back. After someone new works on a vehicle someone higher up is supposed to look at it and make sure it is done right. $450 is a lot and I thought the $345 I paid was bad.

@luisadannointed it is fixed and is home. Was a $345 repair. Now it’s burning oil I’m not sure why but will probably have to go back to the garage soon.

@Thehorse I dropped it off Wednesday and they never called me that night so I assumed they must have needed to get a part. I called towards the end of the day yesterday and it was repaired. $345 with an oil change since I was low on fluid. So that will be another repair soon I’m guessing.

@andriaperry I dropped it off Wednesday and he didn’t call me that night so I called yesterday and he told me what was wrong and had fixed it. It’s burning oil though so if it keeps that up it’ll have to go back to the garage.

@thelme55 today is the first day I have driven it since I picked it up from the garage. The first red light I had to brake harder for the pedal went to the floor and the service traction, service esc lights popped back up. So now it will have to go back to the garage.
