That’s Not My Name

I remember my mom telling me she wanted to name my sister Melinda, but call her Mindy. My dad insisted they name her what they were going to call her, so they settled on Mindy in the end. Now, to my stepmom. You see me write her name, Diana, which IS her name. NO ONE calls her that. Since she was born, her family has called her Diane. I asked her what her mom was thinking to name her Diana if she was only going to say Diane. My stepmom didn’t know. Since she married my dad, she does get a “Diana” here and a “Diana” there from my dad’s family, but she says since that’s technically right, she doesn’t mind. For the longest time, my dad would write “Dian” when referring to her in a text or email. He just wasn’t sure what to actually write. So what I write is Diana, but I say Diane. Any name examples like this you know of?

People call me Val. I don't like it. My name is Valerie and when I can tell people what to call me, I tell them Valerie. It's my name and I love my name.

I have known both Val's and Valerie's. Not sure how any of them really stand on the nick name. I think Valerie is very lovely for a name.

My mom had the hardest time with her name which was Elvira. You see in Latvian the long I is not pronounced. Instead with a short sound to come out like Elveera. She would always tell people that is how she preferred it and then the Oak Ridge Boys came out with the song Elvia pronouncing it how my mom did not want her name pronounced and said she would never speak to those guys ever

Oh boy, that must have made it impossible for people to call her what she preferred!

I can't think of any that I know of, or in my family currently... However with future children - I want to name a daughter Aurora, but she'd probably go by Rory a lot. Also if I could have 2 girls the 2nd would be Indigo and be called Indy a lot. Not sure if that is more just a nickname so not sure if that even counts lol

I really like the name Aurora. That’s a Disney Princess name too often ignored.

Not really except for the people who go by their middle name or a nickname. My dad's first name is Paul, but the family calls him Buddy, my mother says Bud. However, to most who don't know him well he is still Paul.OH i just remembered my mom goes by her middle name. Apparently, my grandparents couldn't think of a middle name that went with the name they preferred. So, legally she goes by M. Jeanette.

I can see that with your step mother. My name is actually Julia Anne, but only my cousins and my aunts call me that. I have just 1 aunt that calls me Julia. My brother Michael, goes by Mike, my brother Stephen, goes by Steve and my brother Vincent Patrick, he goes by Pat. I cringe when I get called Jules, I always correct whomever uses that name to address me.

Many people go by shortened versions of their name. I have a friend who is Melody but often called Melanie

I don't mind Judy or Judith although the latter has overtones of when i was in trouble with anyone. My mother never called me Judy. Several 'Judith's' iin the village don't like Judy and I know a Christine who doesn't like it shortened.
