The Rich are preferred customers

Recently, Saif Ali Khan, a somewhat famous actor out here, was stabbed by some intruder...for whatever is the reason. Niva Bupa, the health insurance company promptly cleared his dues at the hospital, rejecting about 1 percent of the claim. When we the middle class, whom the government does not cover, buy coverage out of our hard earned monies, put claim, only 60 to 65 percent of our claim gets approved. I do understand the publicity Niva Bupa gets from serving the rich and the famous. But treating hard working folks like us as unimportant feels so wrong. So yeah, this issue is annoying me. Why cannot insurances control authority (IREDA) charge all the insurance companies some fees, upfront, and use that to employ doctors who will be stationed at each hospital, to verify the proposed tests for any patient. That way the hospital does not get away with useless tests, and our claims are honored almost to the same extent as that of Saif Ali Khan.

I am going to write to IREDA about it. Does he have services of better employee who can define the claim better because of which he recovered so much from the Insurance company? If so, such services should be available to us too.

@vandana7 yes.. you must write about it to IREDA. These services should be provided to all whether they are rich or poor.

I feel the middle classes always get burned. Here in the US, shoplifters and muggers get away with their crimes. Ruch criminals, like Donald Trump, do as well. And people like me pay the bill.

There should be no difference at all. But it's always been the way. The rich get prefential treatment in many ways.

Two big reasons. Saif Ali Khan has name and fame. If his insurance claim is not cleared , it would be in the news and that would be worst disaster for the company. Plus , given the fact his insurance covered for him while there was intruder attack , would bring a positive coverage for them (although it did not turn out exactly like that). Second , would be the rich. I am aware of many rich whose claims were turned down unless they took big 8 figure insurance amounts. But then insurance companies too want to make profit and well I had a claim where only 55% was allowed. Well, ethics are sometimes reserved for the priveleged.

Which company is that..55%...I need to avoid it at all costs. On a more saner note...for every policy of 10000 and above, IRDAI must collect 100 from the insurance companies. This money should be utilized to employ doctors. All the tests and procedures that the hospital proposes to undertake for any privately insured person maybe undertaken only after this doctor says it is necessary. That way, cost of unnecessary tests and procedures can be avoided. In addition to this doctor, there should be another person who can classify the procedure in policy terms, so that the amount of claim can be easily determined. Policies are so verbose, and have so many clauses apart from diseases that a layman cannot understand whether he or she is qualified to claim a particular expenditure or not. In fact, IRDAI needs to standardize the policy wording, and each company that varies from such standards, should indicate only the clauses that differ from the standard document. For that all wordings of all insurance companies would have to be in same format. This also makes comparison easier. A software too should be prepared for comparison. Then people can choose what type of coverage they desire, can afford, and so on.

@RevivedWarrior Gee thanks...don't tell me I think more than those IREDA folks...why can they not think like us...beats me. I have Star Comprehensive coverage of 7500000 with add on extra protect. Apart from this, LIC's cancer policy of 1000000 (valid till I touch 75) and LIC's jeevan arogya 9 lakhs till 80 years. Obviously, I started with Jeevan arogya and cancer policy. Then Star comprehensive and finally the add on. Why I took this large sum? I believe expenses are gonna increase as we go forward.. And as I estimated, 60 percent will be the claim that will be honored. Better multiple policies...if not here, something elsewhere...LIC policies are benefit policies so I can claim under them as well as the indemnity policy i.e., comprehensive. It will help to cover part of the rejected claim, is what I thought. My father is covered for 10 lakhs with HDFC Ergo. 1 lakh with New India assurance. And now has Abha card for 5 lakhs since he is 90 years old. New India Assurance policy was the first one, and I simply am not comfortable letting go of it, because private companies don't do as much justice as the government companies do. You would think health expenses are only so much. But not true. The coverages are mostly for hospitalization. We have to provide at least 10 lakh for other expenses. There are expenses for which even when we are eligible, we don't claim, because running about for claiming is more expensive. For example 5000 for tests every three years. I need to seriously start claiming. LOL
