The river and parts of the bay have frozen

We've had very cold temperatures for over a week now so the Toms River has frozen over mostly and parts of the Barnegat Bay have frozen as well. There was drama recently about a fox who was stranded on a floating piece of ice in the middle of the bay. She eventually was rescued after days of drama. Anyway authorities are telling everyone to stay off of the ice. Um, doesn't that just go without saying? Doesn't everyone know that? Apparently not. It was drilled into me as a child that you NEVER walk on ice because if you fall through you'll never get back up. Still I have to laugh. Back in the winter of 1976-1977 it was super cold. The bay froze so much and so hard that people were literally driving their cars from one side to the other. . . including my parents. My mother was pregnant with me at the time. My dad drove their Datsun sports car all around the bay. How I wish there were videos of that. There were actual traffic accidents on the ice on the bay. The bay isn't that frozen these days but parts of it are solid. That isn't a normal thing for this area. I can't wait for the weather to warm up.

I've always been so curious what's it like to live in a country with snow. When I looked at it in TV shows/Movies, it kind of look pretty and magical. And a frozen river? Wouldn't it be cool to walk on it.

Snow is beautiful falling from the sky... I could sit in my warm house and watch it falling for hours... But, once snow is on the ground, it's terrible! It's slick and COLD! People fall and break bones on it! Worst of all is if you have to drive to work after it snows. You have to go out in the freezing cold and shovel a path to the road so you can slip and slide your way to work and hope you don't have an accident and kill yourself or other people...

@DaddyEvil and my car is tiny so it doesn't want to go in the snow/ice.

That's pretty crazy! Except that I would expect a river or bay to freeze given your northern locale. And speaking of 1977, I lived in south Florida at the time and on January 16, 1977, it snowed in south Florida. So much so that my brother and I were able to build a small snowman! It certainly was fun, and a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence, but I will say I think it would be more fun to drive around on a frozen bay! lol And I'm one of those idiots that would probably try to walk on a frozen body of water! Haha, just kidding, Im scared to walk on ice on land!

Yes. The heat has been going almost non-stop. My bank account will be crying next month.

Remember, we’re the country that has to warn people that hot coffee is hot, so it stands to reason that they need to reiterate “don’t walk on the icy water.”

We had some ice flow on the Ohio River earlier this week. It’s above freezing now so that’s no longer a problem.

I can't imagine being in a car driving on the ice.

That Datsun must have been able to really scoot over that kind of ice.

Staying in extremely low temperatures and driving in Snow and Ice can be very challenging. In the picture, the ice looks quite fragile.
