The weather is nicer!! The sun is out, it’s above freezing, and that ugly white stuff is melting. So why did I wait until NOW to plan an escape? I’m not leaving the faucets dripping while I’m on a trip. Anyway, I’ll take you with me (as usual) when I leave next week, but first we’ll continue to salute the people who left us in 2024. Here’s one that even @NJChicaa will know…by name, at least.
#7: Dave Loggins
If you’re wondering, yes, Dave Loggins was related to Kenny Loggins: second cousins. And if you’re wondering why NJ Chic will know his name, it’s because Dave Loggins co-wrote a Jimmy Buffett song. In fact, he co-wrote my personal favorite Jimmy Buffett song: “Island.”
In addition to that, Loggins’ name also appeared on my 100 favorites list last year, as the writer of the Three Dog Night hit “Pieces of April.” His songwriting was extensive in pop, rock, and country…oh, and in sports, too: he wrote “Augusta,” the theme song for the Masters Golf Tournament on CBS.
He did manage to be a “one-hit wonder” on his own, when “Please Come to Boston” became a top five hit in 1974. That gave him a Grammy nomination. Primarily known in country music, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in the 1990s. Additionally, his duet with Anne Murray, “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do,” won them a CMA Vocal Duet award in 1984.
I’m not a “#1 fan of the man from Tennessee” as he sang in “Please Come to Boston,” but he did write two of my favorites, and for that I have to say, “Thank you.”
Dave Loggins
Born David Allen Loggins, November 10, 1947, Mountain City, Tennessee
Died July 10, 2024, Nashville, Tennessee (illness) (age 76)
HALL OF FAME: Nashville Songwriters
Here’s his version of “Pieces of April,” which later became a hit for Three Dog Night:

Right. Kenny was born on the other side of the country (in Washington state).

You’re a kid, I expect that. I also don’t expect you to go for mellow folk-rock like “Please Come to Boston.”

@porwest — Kenny rocks a little harder than Dave did.

Still below freezing here, but just... so no melting and I don't see any new stuff coming down.

Yes, it really was. It hit me because my dad was a lot like that, moving around all over the place. Probably why I had a nervous stomach as a child that still bothers me to this day.

He didn’t have the commercial popularity of his cousin, but he still was a big talent.

Ah, so you don’t read the liner notes. Well, now you DO know the name.
BTW, another Buffett collaborator will be on this list soon.
