Egg prices are going to get even higher

I read an article a couple of days ago that egg prices are up 36% over the past year. Well now the news is sounding the alarm that we can expect them go increase like 20% more this year. The MAGA tin foil hat cult members think it was all some crazy conspiracy due to the election and holiday baking season. Sane Americans recognize that it is a result of a massive H5N1 bird flu outbreak here in the country. Poultry farmers are being forced to euthanize tens of thousands of their birds. The average price of a dozen eggs these days is around $4. In California it is something like $8. My buddy @porwest refuses to pay more than $2 for a dozen eggs. He is going to need to start up a chicken coop in his backyard if he doesn't want to pay that price. For me eggs are a non-negotiable. I need them for cooking and baking and I will pay whatever I need to in order to have them on hand. Maybe I'll have to buy one less candle or one less pair of flip flops but I will always have eggs in the fridge.

I eat a lot of eggs. I'll keep buying them but may start eating less of them.

Everyone has a breaking point and eggs may be next. At one time, during the Obama years, when gas was tickling $5 a gallon, people actually avoided driving and caused a surplus in supply which ultimately did force prices down a bit. There are always alternatives. In the case of gas people either avoided certain trips to various places, carpooled or used public transportation.

@porwest I remember. I traded rides to work with another guy that drove through here. He drove one week and I drove the next. I'm not planning on sharing eggs with anyone, though.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, I imagine sharing eggs would be...problematic, and depending on how they are shared, potentially gross as well. lol

My parents have friends with chickens. They don’t like eggs, so why they have the chickens (in the city) I don’t know, but my dad and stepmom have access to free eggs because of that. They won’t take money for the eggs either.

@NJChicaa I think our city must allow it because these are pretty by the book people. Because it’s not worth taking the chance, free eggs or not.

I always wanted to have chickens when I was at the house but the town didn't allow them. Many people disregarded that and had them anyway but I did not.

I had the idea of having a couple of chooks here but immediately dismissed it. They'd have a terrible life on our tiny patch and we'd have a terrible life copping flack from all the village.
