ChatGPT is our new go-to source

In our state, Western Australia, we belong to several Facebook sites. One is Lost Cuballing and another Lost Narrogin. We had our farm near Cuballing and recently a woman posted saying her father had farmed near Lol Gray Soak which is in the Cuballing area. Narrogin is a bigger town where Vince grew up and where we both went to school.
My father had often mentioned Lol Gray and I thought he had gone to school there. Vince wrote this and the woman asked about the school. Not having any other information, we went to ChatGPT, an AI site, which instantly came up with the opening and closing dates of the school, and some other relevant information. It mentioned a picnic area there and a plaque situated on the ruins of the old school building.
We’ll be checking it out once we take off in our motor-home. We’ve found ChatGPT astonishingly useful and accurate the few times we’ve used it. It would have taken us a month of Sundays to come up with the information it gave us.
I’ve just gone to ChatGPT again and it tells me Lol Gray emigrated from England in the early 1800s and worked as a shepherd and sandalwood cutter in the area. A soak is a natural water source.
The photo is of my father’s class in his last year of school.

How interesting! Your dad looks a lot happier than the kid on the front row.

@DaddyEvil — “Okay, Johnny, you were bad today, and for that you have to sit on the front row of the class picture!”

It is amazing what you can find out in a minute or two from AI.

@Fleura I thought there had been a school at Lol Gray and I thought there was a plaque and picnic area but I wasn't sure enough to put it out there. In that case, it confirmed what I thought.
I didn't word my comment very well. It gave us a lot of information about Vince's operations but in a succinct, dot point form in language we could understand. As background, it saved pages and pages of reading trying to follow stuff we didn't fully understand.
It was wrong once, saying Ceduna was in West Australia when it's actually in South Australia.

So many of the kids look very sober. It probably was not often that they had to sit for pictures. Your dad has a nice smile, though.

I don't think it was really the done thing in those days to smile. Most expressions in photos from way back are fairly stern.

What an astounding photo Judy!
Yes that ol ChatGPT is grand isn't it..there is also one that compiles all the AIs into one called Poe..check that one out..it gives you even more answers.
Glad you were able to find out all you did.

I'm glad ChatGPT could help you out.
Some of the kids in the photo didn't look happy to have their picture taken.
Uhm... I'd still double check any information ChatGPT gives you. It still gives inaccurate information at times.

@JudyEv At least you had an idea what was there so ChatGPT just confirmed it for you.

So the 'lost' before the cities names are part of the names, or just what they are called?
There are fb groups here related to our city but many are virtual garage sales. Although on one a lot of people ask questions.

The towns are Cuballing and Narrogin so the 'Lost' is just added on. A lot of interesting historical stuff comes up from time to time. In our area, Treeby, we have a 'Freeby Treeby' where people put up stuff they don't need any more and also a Treeby Buy and Sell.

I don't think too many enjoyed school back in those days.

I have heard of ChatGPT but don’t know how it affects me and have never knowingly used it.

It's basically a search engine I guess but AI generated. It's free to use.

Wow, what an amazing story! It’s so cool how places like Cuballing and Narrogin hold so much history, and it’s great that ChatGPT could help uncover those details for you. Lol Gray’s backstory as a shepherd and sandalwood cutter adds such a personal touch to the area’s history. That’s the kind of thing you’d never find quickly without some serious digging.
Love the connection you’ve drawn between your father’s memories and these historical tidbits—it makes it feel even more special. Have an amazing time checking out the picnic area and the plaque when you hit the road with your motorhome! By the way, the class photo must be such a treasure to have—like a little window into the past. ??

There is probably a register of historical schools somewhere but I've no idea how you would access it.
