It was normal in the good old days to have house guests. Come school holidays we would spend holidays at different places of our relatives and they in turn would visit us and stay with us. That was our only enjoyment. Fast forward. We no longer need to stay in people's houses. Every house has enough of entertainment and staying away may be only when on goes from one country to another. When I was touring the US I stayed at three different places after my tour and yes they too have stayed with us when they visited India What's your story?

Accommodation is a big problem if you love traveling. Its great if you have friends and relatives who do not mind letting you stay in their places. But for loners like me, hotels and hostels are the only places to stay at. Unless we want to spend a night at the railway station or bus station, and that's super uncomfortable.

I lived in Europe and Japan for the first 15 years of my life. So I did not visit relatives or friends until we came back to the states.

We used to stay at our grandparents' the majority of times, as they had a couple of spare rooms. But they didn't live far away and there wasn't much to do in that little town. Other less close relatives did host me a few times and they lived by the sea or the mountains, so way more fun. It's cheaper than a hotel but you gotta help around the house, adapt to their customs and be sociable. Guess I'd rather spend some extra money.

@allknowing I lost sight of most relatives. I'd say generally people no longer trust or rely on each other like they used to, or they simply prefer staying on their own.
