He was a roan purebred Belgian Draft stallion born in 1928 on the Earle Brown Farm near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brooklyn is thought to be the largest horse of his era. He was a worldwide sensation standing 19.2 hands in height and weighing 3,200 pounds(almost a ton and a half). The average Belgian Draft weighs about 2,000 pounds with the females being a bit lighter. He had enormous feet and the farrier needed a bar of iron 30 inches long to make just one horseshoe. He was a gentle giant with a calm, docile nature. Only one other Belgian Draft surpassed him. That was a Shire gelding called Sampson(also known as Mammoth). He was born in 1846 and grew to 21.2 hands tall and weighed 3,359 pounds. Brooklyn had a great-grandfather, the famous horse Farceur 7332 who was inducted into the Belgian Draft Horse Hall of Fame around 1910. Belgian Draft horses can pull twice their body weight(up to 8,000 pounds)and their have been several instances where they have pulled heavier loads. These could work tirelessly for ten hours a day on farms pulling plows and transporting goods. These horses were once indispensable to farmers and industrial workers. Still, Brooklyn impressed and as a yearling he placed first in his class, winning the title of Reserve Junior Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 1929. Later in his life, he was owned by Charles Grant Good who showed Brooklyn around the country for ten cents a view. He lived until 1948. The picture is from prstables.com

Some of those draft horses truly are massive. We don't have many Belgian drafts in Australia.
