Howdy from the end of I-65! I ran out of road and smack dab into Mobile, Alabama! Nothing to report yesterday, because it was driving. Today might be a different story. Before I leave the hotel I’ll give you another great musician we lost last year. #4: David Sanborn I’m not much on jazz (I’m trying, though…been listening to a lot of Bix Beiderbecke lately), but David Sanborn was a lot more than a jazz saxophonist. He was one of the go-to session sax players in the 70s. Need a short list? The Stones, the Eagles, Roger Waters, David Bowie (linked below, one of my favorite videos), and even Bruce Springsteen…who, you might know, had his own sax player! You couldn’t get away from Sanborn (much like Phil Kenzie, another great sax player). He was in the band on the first year of SNL, he played on Letterman a lot, and he had his own show, Night Music. The loss of David Sanborn in 2024 was gigantic. You may not know his name, but you dang sure know that sax of his. David Sanborn Born David William Sanborn, July 30, 1945, Tampa, Florida Died May 12, 2024, Tarrytown, New York (prostate cancer) (age 78) Sanborn playing sax on this absolutely SMOKING live version of David Bowie’s “Young Americans,” from Dick Cavett’s TV show:

One of the few “session musicians” who definitely had a recognizable name.
