Don't get me wrong, I'm a pure Filipino, but we celebrate Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year. We eat tikoi/tikoy, Hopia (Mooncake Filipino version), and the elderlies would give out ampaos (red envelope with money inside).
This has been a tradition ever since, maybe it's because my family is a huge believer of feng shui (Chinese geomancy), and we also have friends who are Chinese, so that's why it became a custom to celebrate it.
And the school I'm working at has Chinese students, so that's why we don't conduct classes every Chinese New Year.
Happy Chinese New Year!

No harm in celebrating anything that you believe in. Have fun
