The finance minister in India has increased the income tax limit to 12lakhs for budget 2025. That means a person does not have to pay any income tax till his salary reaches above 12lakhs. The problem is very less people in India are earning a good salary. There's a need for sustainable earning and jobs for the Indians. Moreover the Delhi election are knocking at the door.

Yes, I don't earn much and so don't have to pay taxes but the high price of essential commodities is pinching hard.

Is 12 lakhs a decent salary? I don't know what the cost of life is like in India. Tax relief sounds good if the country can afford doing so, but yeah, that won't help those who struggle to make a living and earn way less than that, and it seems like many people are in such situation.

12 lakes per annum is quite decent in India but very few people in India earn that salary.

@aninditasen Thanks for the info. It sounds like they took a bold risk by not letting people who are somehow well off pay any taxes. Maybe they could have done something more effective for those who are really poor.

It is a result of Politico-Economic calculations. Political factor : Upcoming Delhi State Assembly elections. Economic : Economic Survey plus regular report show Economy in distress. Urban consumption has been outpaced by rural albeit by a few points. Even festive season did not lead to good demand rise. Many Industries as well as Services sector is facing downturn or slow growth. Deposit growth in banks is slow. Persisting high interest rates are proving to be detrimental. Inflation still bites. So income tax changes were in fact direly needed. However, FM should have at least removed GST or reduced it on Life and Medical Insurance and any kind of medical devices. Plus I need to see if the spending on Healthcare & Education has seen any jump from the Government as they are very much needed.

The government should spend much more in the health industry and also monitor its proper use. GST is eating up the entire economy and medical insurance is just a gamble in India.

In India, there are good amount of people who are not paying taxes but earning in sweet 8 figures. E.g scrap dealers. They are yet to be bought under the income tax. Also curb to corruption. Centre or states have not been effective in controlling the corruption and black money market. Although raising the ceiling to 12 Lakhs will be a relief , the challenge is interest rates are high and inflation is high plus imports are high. All these need to come down in order for the country to prosper. After an year, there may be curbs or restrictions in some ways , if things does not work out this year. Lets see!

You are right. GST for everything doubles the price of items. Where corruption is concerned, the politicians are corrupt themselves they want percentage from every investment so I don't think that will be easy.
