Should we be more concerned about air travel safety?

Like many people, I do try to keep up on news. I feel it's more important than it's ever been, as our world in general seems to be in turmoil we never imagined. This morning, a plane leaving Houston for New York appears to have caught fire right before take-off, luckily the passengers were all removed in time and the crisis was averted. Add this to the list of sad tragedies this week of the horrific crash in D.C. with the plane and the helicopter in the Potomac. Then the terrible crash in Philadelphia of the air ambulance, and all the lives lost there. No, I am not in to spreading conspiracy theories about these disasters. I am simply wondering--why? Is it lack of good plane maintenance? Poor planning or poor decisions? Lack of good training, lack of employees? One person doing a job that should take two people? Because my life currently requires me to be where I am and care for my son, I do not currently fly. Not to mention anything I catch, I can bring back to my son, whether it's COVID or a bug of some kind, and I am trying not to do that. But some of my family members fly for business/job purposes, as do many friends. The idea of anyone getting into a plane is getting really scary. I am personally leaning toward maintenance and lack of proper staffing. But of course, that's an opinion only, not a fact. Or is it all simply circumstantial, or one of those things where the powers that be repeat that same saying ''it is what it is'' which of course is not an answer. Many people are quickly losing confidence in air travel in the US. What about you? Do you fly often? Do you think this is just a ''bad run'' of incidents/accidents, or what will become the ''new normal'' and poor safety? I don't know, of course. I just know it's concerning.

Things happen in bunches on occasion. I think there might be people worried more about their job than DOING their job, but I don’t think it’s DEI like some idiot I could name….

My family always says that often things happen in “3’s” and I have known that to prove itself to be true in the past. And no, I don’t think that DEI has a factor in this, either.

It's still safer than driving which many of us do almost on a daily basis.

Yes, it is, and I remind myself of that all the time, too.

I really know nothing of what goes on behind the scenes exactly. But I would hope I could entrust those professionals to do whatever it takes to keep everything in working order - and keep everyone safe. Even though I'd want to get from Point A to Point B in one piece, THAT is not what I'd want to have to focus on / worry about. The way these incidents have been going (all the way from when that plane door opened in flight), I have lost a lot of that trust . . . these "accidents" topped it off. Thank goodness I don't fly, but I know plenty of people who do - and that can be worrisome.

I cannot imagine the panic that would take place if a plane door flew open in flight. Not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination.

I can understand low staffing levels having an impact on air safety but it's certainly worrying, whatever the cause.

There seems to be a lot to worry over these days. I try not to, but when a person has children and a family, we always worry for them.

I’m probably going to fly twice this year, but I haven’t actually flown in 20 years. I’m not scared to though. I think we need more staffing, and heck, more training never hurt. Unfortunately, I just think it’s one of those weird times bad things happen in succession.

I have flown many times and have never liked flying, Now if I had the chance to go anywhere I would not want to fly,

I do fly often and I'm not scared. It's just a flurry of incidents in quick succession. They're 99.99% safe.

Yes, they are usually safe.
