Bracing the knee - do you wear anything special to prevent injury while playing or exercising?

Over the last few years, I have developed some weird injury in the knee that gets aggravated when I play or run. I wear a knee brace suring sports or running to help protect the knee. I'm not sure if it's helpful, but some doctors and physiotherapists suggested this. But the main thing I need to do is to strengthen the muscles to stabililise the knee! I have to work on that too.
That's the light knee brace that I wear - this time when I was playing badminton

Since I don't play sports or exercise I have not thought about this. I do know that I have to have a shopping cart or a four-pronged cane with me when I go out because my right knee sometimes tends to go out and I don't want to fall,

I am into muay thai as hobby. I am already 45 so just to be safe, I am wearing an ankle brace. I guesss this helps in preventing my ankle from
Getting dangerously extended. Maybe I’ll stop wearing it when my ankles get stronger.
