well we are already well on our way but now Trump's next plan is to do an executive order to abolish the Department of Education. Awesome. He tried to do it in his first term. It was part of the Project 2025 plan. He put the wife of the head of a wrestling corporation in charge of it. Well here we go.
My work bestie and I were talking about charter schools and homeschooling last week. Sure they are both great ways to indoctrinate children into certain beliefs and to prevent them from learning some things. Tax payer dollars shouldn't support that though. Trump is all about "school choice" which I guarantee he could not define but he just knows that his MAGA cronies want it.
So now he wants to get rid of the Department of Education. Like just read that sentence again. How does that make any sense? How does the US remain the #1 nation in the world without oversight of education?
I've been a teacher for 24 years. I wasn't sad to see "No Child Left Behind" go away. That was a disaster and a joke. I also wasn't sad to see former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos go away because she was a disaster and a joke. Just the very idea that some wrestling mogul is supposed to be in charge of the DOE is insane and repulsive.
Trump's justification for eliminating the DOE is “We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing." He also has been repeating lies that students are somehow getting sex-changing surgeries while at school.
Um NO. That isn't happening. Obviously it isn't happening in red states and it isn't evening happening in the blue states that he loves to try to demonize. Teachers aren't indoctrinating students. There are no magical surgeries done during school time. As a biology teacher yes I have to talk about some things involving biological sex but I always tell the students that it is just biological sex and not gender. By the time we get to the evolution unit I straight up tell the students "I love you but I don't care what you believe about evolution--you just need to know about it".
Yup I am a teacher. I am not trying to "indoctrinate" anyone about anything except maybe that vaccines are safe and don't cause autism. (FU RFK Jr) You do you. I've had several transgender students over the years and they were very happy and confident in living their lives. Of course I accepted them. One of them I've even had here (after graduation) for dinner.
I have no agenda. I am a teacher. I am just trying to put information into the minds of students. To defund the Department of Education would be a colossal mistake that honestly would hurt the red state MAGA parents and students worse.

Same here. As a teacher, I just provide facts about what is known and what is not known. I found it amusing when Trump did not know that we're all female at conception. Maybe they didn't teach Intro to Psychology where he "went to college."

There's a lot of problems with schools all over the country. Not all teachers do their jobs as they should, and parents aren't happy about what their kids are learning, but kids have to go to some kind of structured school. Federal founds aren't being distrubeted equally amoung schools, and not all schools are run equally. A complete overhaul of the DOE is needed.

In general, schools in the US are pretty good. But I do know some teachers who get frustrated with school politics. One of the biggest issues I have seen is discipline problems among kids whose families of origin do not respect education.
