Day 18 – Trust
2 Chronicles 16:1 In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah and built Ramah, that he might let none go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.
2 Then Asa brought silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of JEHOVAH and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-Hadad king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying, 3 “Let there be a treaty between you and me, as there was between my father and your father. Here, I have sent you silver and gold; come, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
4 Then Ben-Hadad heeded King Asa and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel. They attacked Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim, and the storage cities of Naphtali.
5 Now it happened, when Baasha heard it, that he stopped building Ramah and ceased his work.
6 Then King Asa took everyone in Judah, and they carried away the stones and timber of Ramah, which Baasha had used for building; and with them he built Geba and Mizpah.
7 At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him, “Because you relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on JEHOVAH your Elohiym, therefore, the army of the king of Syria escaped from your hand. 8 Were the Ethiopians and the Lubim not a huge army with many chariots and horsemen? Yet, because you relied on JEHOVAH, He delivered them into your hand. 9 For the eyes of JEHOVAH run to and fro throughout the whole earth; to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly, therefore, from now on you will have wars.”
10 Then Asa became angry with the seer, and put him in prison, for he was enraged at him because of this. Asa oppressed some of the people at that time.
11 Note that the acts of Asa, first and last, are indeed written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became diseased in his feet, and his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek JEHOVAH, but the physicians. 13 Thus, Asa rested with his fathers; he died in the forty-first year of his reign. 14 They buried him in his tomb, which he had made for himself in the City of David; and they laid him in the bed which was filled with spices and various ingredients prepared in a mixture of ointments. They made a great burning for him.
God’s names:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
Elohiym – Supreme God
Yeshuwa – Jesus
God’s character:
Judge
People take care of their problems by seeking help from those who stood against them in the past, giving them bribes to make their problems go away. It’s a common theme in movies and television. Instead of making allies, it gives their previous enemies leverage against them.
When Baasha, king of Israel came against Asa and built a city in his territory, instead of relying on JEHOVAH for help, he called on the king of Syria, Ben-Hadad for help and sent bribe money so he would break his alliance with Israel and fight against them.
JEHOVAH told Asa because he relied on Syria for help, he would have wars for the remainder of his reign. Asa put the prophet in prison for the Word he gave him from JEHOVAH. Then Asa became diseased in his feet for the last six years of his reign, dying in the forty-second year.
When you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord, you committed your life to Him, to seek Him with every trouble Satan brings against you. However, many Christians, like Asa, rely on help from other sources. When they do, trouble comes their way from Yeshuwa for not relying on Him for help.
Yeshuwa told His people to rely on Him and He would give them rest from their burdens.
Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
You carry unnecessary burdens when Satan comes against you. Don’t rely on others for help, give your burdens, your troubles to Yeshuwa. He will take care of them, and you will have rest.
Asa didn’t rely on JEHOVAH; he relied on help from Ben-Hadad. Because of it, Elohiym brought sickness on him. You don’t know what trouble Yeshuwa will allow Satan to bring against you when you rely on others instead of Him. Don’t take that chance. Rely on Yeshuwa for His help in every matter, even the ones that seem easy for you to take care of.
Let’s pray: Father, forgive me for relying on myself or others when Satan brings trouble my way. Remind me to seek You first in everything so there will be peace in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
