The ongoing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is worrying. What if the war spreads and affects the neighbouring countries? Diplomatic relations between DRC and Rwanda have already gone sour. Uganda on the other side seems to be getting overwhelmed by refugee influx. The president of DRC and the M23 rebels’ leaders are reluctant to fully participate in peace talks. Despite the East Africa Community (EAC)’s efforts to help restore stability and therefore allow humanitarian aid into the war-torn region, no commendable results have been realized. Leaders from SADC and EAC member states are currently in Tanzania trying to find out how they can help end the menace in the largest country in Africa. Interestingly, most of the outside world has remained mum, and possibly, might step in once the war gets totally out of hand!

It's a sad state of affairs.. There is UN to take care of world peace and humanitarian activities. But they are not effective. Those having a strong impactful voice are involved in most wars in the world directly or indirectly. They don't have much to do about the third world countries and the issues. Most of what is said is on paper and never actualised.

True. And the superpowers are busy funding other wars and making deadlier weapons

The ongoing conflict in DRC is definitely a big concern not just for few countries but for Africa as a whole. It has potential to destabilize the region around Rwanda , Uganda and perhaps Burundi. The diplomatic relations between DRC and Rwanda have been strained for sometimes with accusations. The reluctance of the parties involved for a peace talk , further complicate effort to restore stability in the region. Silence of the international community is also concerning. Perhaps global powers will get involved if things go way out of control. The problem is by then the economic and humanitarian costs would be too high. Not sure if there is an African leader capable as Nelson Mandela now in Africa. It is better for regional leaders to look for a solution and avoid the political instabilities.
