My Most Expensive Purchases Last Year

If there is one thing you must absolutely know about me, I am super cheap. I do not buy things unless I absolutely have to like food since I don't want to starve to death and clothing when my old clothes become too tattered to wear. I made three expensive purchases as per my financial situation and standards last year. In May, I purchased a new bed frame from Amazon last year for $160. I needed to replace my bed frame that suddenly broke while I was lying in bed watching YouTube clips. I placed my mattress that was still completely fine on the floor and slept on it without a bed frame despite having chronic pain for a week until Amazon delivered my new bed frame order. Then, it took me a couple hours to fix it myself since the pieces arrived separately to be fitted together by the customer. That was a lot of stress and work, and made me realize how important a bed frame is for someone with chronic pain and in need of a proper bed. Thankfully, my mattress was and still is fine and I didn't need to pay an extra $100 to replace it. In August, I also bought Apple earbuds for $25 from Best Buy since my previous pair had an open wire which is very dangerous especially if water somehow gets into the open wire. I needed to replace them if I didn't want to chance an electrocution. In August again, the last expensive purchase I made was a $25 Amazon gift card from Best Buy for online purchases I needed to make on Amazon regarding some skincare for sensitive skin that was sold out on the Target and Walmart websites, but was only available on Amazon by third-party sellers. These were the only three expensive purchases I made last year and I considered them necessities alongside food, water, clothing, etc. I wouldn't have purchased any of them if my bed frame didn't break, my Apple earbuds didn't need to be replaced due to being a safety hazard, and sensitive skincare was available on Target and Walmart websites that I don't mind giving my debit card information to. I'm not a huge fan of Amazon and usually only use it when I have Amazon gift cards. It could be way worse, so I'm grateful that this is all I bought outside of basic necessities and paying my bills like utilities and insurance payments. For a cheap person like me with a tight budget, these were very expensive for me, but I didn't use credit cards so there was no debt involved. That's better than nothing.

You seem to be more into needs than wants but at the same time you did choose quality and for that you had to pay more. Seems reasonable to me.

Yes, I needed a new bed frame which was the biggest purchase last year. It broke down the side and made the entire frame topsided and completely unusable. I would've had a curved spine if I kept it.

@lilacskies There was a big job done here too The wood worm ate into a lot of wood around. Had to replace the plank on which the matresses rest and that was in our guest room.

@RebeccasFarm I saw a podcast the other day and one of the financial advisors on the podcast mentioned that the average American family has 200k of credit card debt. I was like... what?!

You are very careful with your money. I do shop Amazon quite a bit, with free gift cards I get from doing surveys. I have connected my Pay Pal account and can use that "free money" as well.

Yes, I have no choice since my finances are really tight. I don't have a full-time job so my freelance income is very sporadic and unreliable. I need to save every penny I can get so these expenses did quite the damage last year. I don't use any money from my PayPal account unless I absolutely have to.

I admire your frugal decisions. It's hard sometimes not to overspend, but I think we do pretty good at it.

Thank you! The temptations are there, so it takes some effort to be disciplined at times.

Sounds like you a very disciplined and practical approach when it comes to expense and spending and prioritizing what and when is something absolutely required. The ability to stretch the budget when needed and make thoughtful purchases is commendable, even when you had to make expensive purchases. Good thing is you avoided debt and found ways for things to work. Bed frame situation – is a good way to remember of how small things can make a difference, when dealing with chronic pain. Being frugal is never easy. Looks you have mastered it! Enjoy the time!

Thank you so much! Yes, I am making every penny count since I am working with a very tight budget here. None of these purchases would've been made last year if they were other options. I would never have bought that bed frame if it didn't break down like that out of nowhere. Thank you. I am staying debt free and keeping afloat.

I wouldn't call you cheap but frugal, or even responsible with your finances. I like saving too, although sometimes I'm tempted to try new things. And health is probably the best investment one can do, good you got a nice deal on the bed frame.

Thank you! I get called cheap a lot by my sister-in-law who look down on how I control my finances. She doesn't need to worry about money, I do, so she doesn't get it. I am saving as much money as possible to become financially independent and completely move out of my parents' house for good. Health is wealth. I wish I was healthy!
