Help needed please – especially from the Indians out there!

I have a lot of things I inherited from my mother, and many of those she inherited from her parents. Every now and then I will attempt to sort through a few of them but it all takes so much time! Here is one thing I would like to know more about. It’s a pair of silver cufflinks which belonged to my grandfather, who was born in India to Scottish and Welsh parents in the 1890s. Can anyone tell me what the script on them means? Thanks for your help! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

@Fleura The silver cufflinks are of great sentimental value. You might as well ask an expert for appraising the value of them .

I guess they are more than 100 years old. My mother was born in 1924, and she was the second youngest of five children, the eldest was born about 1918. And before that her father had given up his work travelling the world as a ship's engineer so he could stay at home and be a family man. So he probably bought them either when he visited India on a ship (which I know he did) or earlier as a young man growing up in India.

@changjiangzhibin89 I have so many bits and pieces, it would be expensive to take every little thing for appraisal.

I have no idea, but I highly recommend you get them appraised.

I doubt they would be worth much, we don't have any great family treasures!

Maybe take a rubbing of it and scan into a translation site? Do tell us if you ever find out anything.

At first I thought it was just a squiggly design, but then I wondered if it did actually say something.
