Flicks and Fauna: The mischief of Dugong

In the Philippine (2004) TV series "Marina," Dugong is a mischievous sea-witch and the cousin of the main villain, Victoria. Played by Malou de Guzman, Dugong often causes trouble for Marina, the mermaid hero, adding supernatural twists and dark humor to the show. My grandma is a total fan of the channel that aired this series and back then, everyone at home have no choice but to watch whatever she watches. This so-called Dugong became iconic but not so sure if the impression on every viewer is still the same as time goes by. Fun fact: In Filipino culture, "dugong" also means the gentle sea cow, known for its peaceful nature. Quite the contrast to the character's dark and cunning personality in the series.
