Does food stocking lead to over consumption and poor portion control?

Most of us stock food at home. This could be eggs, processed food items like cookies or snacks. Most times, when we buy the items, we are inclined to buy a little more of the items. This could be for our interests or perhaps because we would like to stock items in case, we have guests or parties at home.
Most times, when we have abundance of food at home, we are less inclined to control the intake. A well-stocked pantry can most times lead to mindless snacking and eating larger portions of food than the required quantity. Some people justify extra servings to avoid the food waste and indirectly promote overeating. Overconsumption can be harmful in long run with processed food as they could be high in calories, salt or sugar.
Food stocking is never an issue -it is how we manage the supply, and that would determine the impact on the health and eating habits. Do you think food stocking lead to over consumption and poor portion control?

Stocking is done with a purpose and it is different for different people. I do not stock much but there is always stuff in the pantry

Stocking is fine. Stocking and then over consuming and then stocking is a problem.

Many Americans only buy food a few times a month (Pretty and I buy groceries twice a month.) so always have more than we need in the house at any one time. We also stock extra food in case something happens and we can't get to a grocery store for a week or more past the time we normally buy groceries. (Sometimes I can't see well enough to drive for over two weeks at a time. This time, it has been over a month since I could see well enough to drive. That's why my brother brought us food.)
Things can happen and we're glad we buy more foods than we need. We keep our freezer well stocked and the cabinets in the kitchen usually have an abundance of food we don't need right then. I don't see that as a problem.

That only meas you are having good control on the food stock and plus you ensure they are put to good use. There is less overstocking. Even I get groceries twice or once a month.

@RevivedWarrior Usually, people in other countries think Americans are strange for buying large amounts of groceries at one time and not going back to the grocery store for another month.

@DaddyEvil I never thought about . But after living in US for sometime, I felt that approach is better in many ways. I am still following that in terms of my grocery purchases.

That a good point. It definitely depends on the person and his/her choices.

I definitely agree with that. What I intended to mention is the food stocking should not lead to food waste or over consumption. As long as the balance is there , it is all fine.

No, I don't think so. In fact in 2020 when the world about lost their minds, people panic shopped and once they realized there wasn't going to be food shortages, it led to a lot of food waste. My husband and I tend to shop in bulk, because it saves money. We don't eat more then we should or not. do think it's impulse control that's important to note. Having to little food can lead to over spending and over eating as welll, and it's a blance because you can't always know how much you'll eat in a week or if cravings will change.

@RevivedWarrior Well, people with food addictions, should not over stock their food, but I live in Florida. We get hit with at least one tropical disaster a year. Having food and water on hand is a must. And, because we observe good preperadness habits, we're not waiting until a storm is upon us.

Good thing you know the balance and able to manage. There are few , who do stock food and either the food gets expired or they over consume and they still keep stocking them. That behaviour could lead to disasters. Luckily you have observed good points and going in the right direction.

For us in this house, yes it does..it is why I try to only have one hand ..but you know it is good to have some cans in an emergency. Soon there will be no food for any of us..this is true.

Well, having control on the food stockign is importnat. Even if we buy some extra , it should not lead to over consumption

No, not at all.
There will always be items that any household will always need.
Those items go on sale occasionally and it is wise to stock up at those times.
Those items may not be edible, but still necessary-deodorant, toothpaste, garbage bags and so on.
Overstocking is only a temporary thing, as items are used regularly.
Food items purchased when on sale can be viewed the same way.
If you are always used to seeing those foods, you will not increase your portions or consumption, it is only when you have had nothing and overstock that you could get into trouble. But those are ones that live hand to mouth.

Stocking is never a bad thing. We definitely should take advantage of the offers and stock things even food. There are occasions that I felt people stock food and either food gets expired or over consumed. Then agan they stock and repeat the cycle.

You are maintaining good balance and is health conscious. I do not see a chance of over consuming in such cases .
