Buddha Statue in Colombo

Friends I was on holiday to Sri Lanka for almost 2 weeks . On the last day somebody mentioned that it would be a good idea to pay homage to the Statue of Lord Buddha which was in the centre of Colombo. Accordingly while driving to the airport we stopped and looked at the massive Statue of the Lord Buddha. it is supposed to be almost 1000 years old and many mention that it was carved and sent from India. It was definitely worth a visit but I wonder if the government could beautify the surroundings with Gardens. it will give more tranquillity and peace to the place.
